Men’s soccer dropped its home opener 3-0 to George Washington on Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex, handing the Bearcats their first loss of the season.

The Bearcats entered Sunday’s match after opening the season with a scoreless draw against Mount St. Mary’s on Thursday.

The first half remained competitive early, with Binghamton finding a few opportunities in the attacking third. Graduate back Will Mahoney helped Binghamton maintain possession as the Bearcats looked for openings, while the team created several chances near the net to score. Binghamton had a goal taken away due to an offside call and later had another close attempt go wide.

George Washington broke through in the 23rd minute to take a 1-0 lead. Senior goalkeeper Natan Jemaneh Admassu made a save later in the half to keep the deficit within one as Binghamton continued searching for an equalizer.

Binghamton went into halftime trailing 1-0, but head coach Tommy Moon said the team had not played with the identity it had developed during the spring and preseason.

“I don’t think we saw our team in the first half,” Moon said. “What we’ve put in in the spring, and what we’ve put in in preseason, we have a certain way that we wanna play, and I don’t think we saw that in the first half.”

The Bearcats came out of halftime looking to change the momentum, but George Washington scored less than two minutes into the half to make the game 2-0. The quick goal made Binghamton’s attempt at a comeback more difficult. Freshman midfielder Anninos Nicolaou put a shot on target, but the opportunity was saved. The Bearcats continued pushing forward as the second half became increasingly physical.

Binghamton picked up a yellow card as George Washington continued to pressure the Bearcats. A video review also took place during the half after a potential red card, with the decision ultimately resulting in a yellow card for the Revolutionaries. George Washington then added its third goal in the 59th minute, putting Binghamton in a 3-0 hole.

Rain began to fall harder as the match moved toward its final stretch, but Binghamton continued trying to create chances. Senior forward Anthony Randazzo had a shot blocked with about 20 minutes remaining as the Bearcats searched for a late goal.

The Bearcats finished the match with four shots and two shots on goal compared to 10 shots and six shots on goal by George Washington.

“I don’t think anything went well today,” Moon said. “Losing 3-0 at home is not good enough.”

The Bearcats will have to regroup as they continue adjusting to a new-look roster. With several new players seeing significant minutes, Sunday’s match gave Binghamton an early test of how quickly the team can come together.

“I think we have to kinda go back to the drawing board and move forward,” Moon said.

The Bearcats look to earn their first win of the season as they travel to face Lafayette College on Wednesday, Aug. 26, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
