After a tough week of road games against ranked opponents, Binghamton University’s men’s lacrosse team will finally get a home game. But unfortunately for the Bearcats (2-4, 0-1 America East), the opponent will still be one of the top teams in the country: No. 12 Maryland-Baltimore County (6-3, 1-0).
The Retrievers are one of the hottest teams in Division I, with a five-game win streak that includes victories over powers Maryland, Ohio State and Towson. UMBC, following the lead of its basketball team, has become the conference’s team to beat. It is the only AE team with a winning record or national ranking.
“At this point, they’re No. 1 in the America East and we’re always looking to knock off No. 1,” said junior attack Jake Boyce.
Senior Terry Kimener leads the Retrievers with 15 goals and 14 assists. He is a two-time All-American and one of the best midfielders in the country.
“He’s pretty nasty,” said BU senior goalie Larry Kline. “He can shoot on the run with both hands pretty well.”
Junior Ryan Smith and sophomore Kyle Wimer are also big scoring threats. UMBC also features one of the America East’s best goalies, junior Jeremy Blevins.
“[Blevins] is good,” Boyce said. “He was rookie of the year two years ago when Chris Mulheron and I were freshmen, so Mulheron and I always try to score on him.”
For Binghamton, it will be the first night game on campus at the Bearcats Sports Complex, and the Bearcats tend to play much better at home.
“I’m pretty fired up,” Kline said. “I’ve never played a night game on campus. I’m hoping it’s like the soccer games and the kids go out and support us.”
“Night games always get guys riled up,” Boyce added. “You have all day to think about the game. When you get there you’re wound up and ready to go.”
Face-off is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday.
