During this weekend’s Associated Collegiate Press conferences in San Francisco, the 775 participants from college newspapers across the country bore witness to the trajectory of media toward Web-based journalism.
Though our print edition has been ranked as one of the best in general excellence (Pipe Dream was ranked fourth of weekly tabloid-sized papers at the conference), it was clear from the conference that dynamic Web publishing is the next stage in college and professional journalism — and we’re getting there.
But our strategy for getting interactive content on our Web site comes from more than just a desire to stay ahead (or at least with) the curve.
A readership survey we conducted last month helped us learn about the demographics of who picks up Pipe Dream on a regular basis, but only you can tell us what kind of campus news, opinion and features you want to read about. This is your newspaper. From the front page to the back sports cover, this paper is about Binghamton University and college life. Tell us what you want to see in our pages and on our Web site, bupipedream.com.
For the past 61 years, Pipe Dream has tried — with varying degrees of success — to be the reflection of the student body’s image on campus and off. Armed with a new arsenal of Web capabilities, we’re approaching a time when we can incorporate more of our readership into the composition of our paper.
In the next few weeks, we’ll be introducing blogs and comments to the Web. With polls and slideshows, your voice will literally be in Pipe Dream, and it’s been a goal six decades in the making.
On a campus with limited public space and incongruous buildings wedged into corners, there is precious little space for students to convene and converse.
But all over campus (and now at over 30 off-campus locations) Pipe Dream is read by students, faculty and staff of different backgrounds and interests.
In an abstract form, Pipe Dream’s pages can be the great unifier on a campus that can be segmented and fractured both geographically and fundamentally.
Certainly, opinions on this campus vary, and so do the perspectives from our readers.
But there’s space for all of it at Pipe Dream.
