After losing to Florida International University (9-6) on Friday, the Binghamton University men’s soccer team (2-13) redeemed themselves in the state of Florida with a victory over Florida Atlantic University (6-11) in Boca Raton on Sunday.

The Owls of FAU opened scoring when Emilio Aranes headed a corner kick past BU senior goalkeeper Jon Locitzer at 13:07. Junior forward Davide DiGenova answered just 13 seconds later when he headed home a pass from midfielder Keith Augeri to make the score 1-1.

FAU’s only other goal of the match was a bloop deflection off a BU defender that slid past Locitzer to give the Owls a 2-1 lead.

As the first half came to a close, the Bearcats poured it on with goals from junior forward Motty Gutflais and sophomore forward Pat Skinner. Gutflais came off the bench and fired a penalty kick that found its mark at 34:32, and Skinner received assistance from freshman Kevin Burns to give BU the lead at 44:25.

Both teams were scoreless in the second half until Gutflais struck again at 89:14 to secure the 4-2 win for the Bearcats.

Men’s Soccer Coach Hristos Dimitriou described BU’s successful crosses and headers as “some of the prettiest goals I’ve seen all season.” He also credits the win to tough defense and an improved passing game.

With another win under their belt, the men’s soccer team will go to Hartwick College to take on the Hawks on Saturday at 1 p.m.
