Brits make splash for BU Swimming and Diving

Niagra falls to internationally-diverse Men’s and Women’s BU squads; Bearcats rise to 2-0

Sophomore Chris McGuire from Essex, England led the Binghamton University men’s swimming and diving team (2-0) to victory over Niagara University by a margin of 120-89 away on Saturday.

McGuire won three events including the 200 yard freestyle (1:48.36), the 100 breaststroke (59:34), the 200 fly (1:56.19), the 200 breaststroke (2:19.83) and anchored the 200 freestyle rally (1:29:78).

Junior Aytac Gurbuz of Istanbul, Turkey and senior Brien Van Wagner of Manhattan each won two events and swam one leg on BU’s first place 200 medley relay. Gurbuz captured the 100 freestyle (50.78), the 100 breast (1:03.46), and VanWagner took first in the 100 backstroke (57.89) and 50 freestyle (23.52).

Also winning individual events were senior Tom Volper and sophomore Jesse Morenus. Volper took first in the 200 free (1:49.28) and the 200 back (1:02.15), while Morenus swept the 500 free (4:56.76) and the 1000 free (10:18.21).

The Bearcats will race for their third win of the season at Towson University on Nov. 3.



The Binghamton University women’s swimming and diving squad (2-0), led by freshman Hannah Clegg of Hampshire, England, soundly defeated Niagara University with a score of 145-89 on Saturday.

In the 200 backstroke, Clegg bested teammate Amy DeWitt’s school record of 2:11.04 by almost three seconds (2:08.18). She also touched first in the 1,000 freestyle (11:18.90), and swam the first leg of BU’s triumphant 200 medley relay.

Freshman Laura Linek won the 50 free (25.45), the 100 free (54.28) and the 200 free (2:00.30). Meanwhile, junior Mary Tennyson captured the 100 breast (1:11.49), the 200 breast (2:37.31) and swam a leg on the winning 200 medley.

Clegg and the Bearcats will get their stroke on in their next meet at Towson University on Nov. 3.
