Assault leads to hospitalization

Binghamton University student George Hamelos is in serious condition at Wilson Regional Medical Center after being assaulted early Saturday morning outside a State Street bar, according to reports from The Press & Sun-Bulletin.

The 20-year-old Bronx native was initially in critical condition after the incident, but he was upgraded to serious condition on Wednesday.

Hamelos and alleged assailant 22-year-old Joseph Rojas of Oak Street, Binghamton, were involved in an altercation outside JT’s Tavern Bar on State Street at 3 a.m. on Saturday that led to the incident.

Rojas was charged with second-degree assault, a felony and sent to Broome County jail without bail, the report states.

“This was not a case of a random act of violence, and allegations were made from both sides,” said Sgt. Gerald F. Kushner Jr. of the Binghamton Police Department.

According to The Press & Sun-Bulletin, Hamelos fell to the ground after he was hit on the back of the head once, and Rojas then allegedly stomped on his head once.

Several city police officers were on State Street at the time and witnessed the incident, Kushner added.

BU spokeswoman Gail Glover confirmed that Hamelos is a student, and said that University staff has met with his family to provide assistance. They continue to be in touch with the family, she added.

Hamelos is a member of BU’s chapter of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon social fraternity and was on the Dean’s List last spring.
