    By Jaki Goldner
pic The Binghamton University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams closed out the regular season on a strong note Saturday afternoon, sweeping the visiting Stony Brook University Seawolves. Both teams collected convincing wins, with the men taking a 162-113 decision and the women winning 199-101. The wins put both Bearcat teams in good position heading into the conference championships. The men started off by taking the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:36:12 and never looked back. Sophomore Joe Perez-Rogers touched first in the 100-yard back (51.33) and the 100 fly (51.98), while freshman David Gleason placed first in…
  • Men’s hoops’ win streak snapped at Maine

    By Daniel Boruchowitz
pic It may be cliché to say it’s tougher to win on the road, but for the Binghamton University men’s basketball team, the saying has certainly been proved true this season. The Bearcats (11-14, 6-4 America East) fell on the road to conference foe University of Maine (15-8, 7-3 AE) this past Saturday, 61-49, in the first of a four-game road swing. The teams were battling for sole possession of third place. Maine led 50-49 with just 2:40 to play in the second half. However, the Bearcats missed all their field goal attempts and free throws down the stretch, while Maine…
  • Vinson, Goeres make strides in home meets

    By Justin Tasch
It had been 35 years since the Binghamton University wrestling team had won a dual meet against Hofstra University; that drought came to an end this past Saturday afternoon at the West Gym. The Bearcats (13-6-1, 4-1-1 CAA) defeated the eight-time reigning CAA champion Pride 28-8. They won seven of the 10 bouts. The loss was just Hofstra’s third loss in conference in its last 71 conference dual meets. Head coach Pat Popolizio was proud that his team was finally able to get over the hump and beat the Pride. “It was a very intense dual meet,” he said. “For…
  • Yablonski and Hamel hurt early; B-Sens rally falls short in third

    By Greg Norman
Four minutes worth of action against the Rochester Americans on Saturday not only cost the Binghamton Senators a hockey game, but also two of their on-ice leaders. In the first period of Saturday’s 5-4 loss, the B-Sens lost team captain Denis Hamel when he collided with a Rochester player. Less than a minute later, enforcer Jeremy Yablonski left the ice after he struggled to gain his balance following a fight against Rochester’s Steve MacIntyre. According to B-Sens head coach Don Nachbaur, Hamel is scheduled to undergo an MRI, and Nachbaur speculated that Yablonski could be out for an undetermined amount…

  • Women’s hoops falls to Stony Brook

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic The Binghamton University women’s basketball team struggled with rebounding and with getting its leading scorer the ball, leading to a 74-60 loss on the road at the hands of Stony Brook (7-16, 5-6 America East) on Saturday, dropping its third consecutive road game. Senior guard and leading scorer Erica Carter, who is averaging just under 14 points per game, was held to just 8 points in the loss for the Bearcats (8-15, 4-6 AE). With Carter leading the way, the team had been averaging a conference-best 7.5 3-pointers per game, but shot just 4-of-13 at Stony Brook. “In the last…
  • Gilbert shines at Syracuse indoor invite

    By Holly Berkowitz
The Binghamton University track and field team is one step closer to the conference championship after this weekend, when the Bearcats competed at two different meets. The squad took part in the Syracuse Invitational on Saturday, where although there was no team scoring, the athletes succeeded in impressing their head coach, Mike Thompson, who was happy with the outcome of the meet. “There were several good performances and a lot of solid performances,” Thompson said about his team in Syracuse. At the top of the list of solid performers was freshman Casey Gilbert, who placed first in the 500-meter dash,…
