  • Men’s basketball beats Bucknell, gets first D-1 win

    By Drew Wolin
pic The monkey is officially off the Bearcats’ back. Despite allowing a substantial halftime lead whittle down to a two-point advantage with nine seconds left in the game, Binghamton University’s men’s basketball team (3-5) was able to hold on just long enough and defeat the Bucknell University Bison (4-5) last Monday. The non-conference game marked the Bearcats’ first victory over a Division I opponent of the 2009-10 season. The Bison play in the Patriot League, a fairly competitive Division I basketball conference. Binghamton’s interim head coach Mark Macon put his bomb squad on the floor to start the game, as four…
  • Carter scores career high 35 in BU rout

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic Against Niagara, Erica Carter scored 20 points only to see the team’s 15-point lead evaporate en route to a Bearcats loss. So Carter decided to kick it up a notch. This time, the Bearcats would not let victory slip away. Carter erupted for 35 points on 9-for-13 shooting from behind the arc to help Binghamton (2-5) overcome Bryant (3-5) on the road Monday, 75-59. The senior guard finished just three points shy of the all-time single-game record for points. Her nine threes set a school record, and it was the most points a Bearcat has scored since 2002. Binghamton’s overall…
  • Bearcat’s season ends in NCAA 1st Round to Penn State

    By Justin Mathew
pic The Binghamton University women’s volleyball team’s season has come to a close, and the final results were as good as anyone could have hoped. The Bearcats ended the year doing battle with the top team in the nation, though it was in a losing effort, after having overcome a low seeding to win the conference tournament. The Bearcats finish with a 15-16 overall record, and a 7-5 record in America East, including tournament matches. Binghamton earned a berth in the NCAA tournament and was given a matchup with top-seeded Penn State University in the first round, as was the case…
  • Bearcat’s second half rally falls short to Marshall

    By Daniel Boruchowitz
pic When a second half comeback falls short, you still pick up the loss but it often becomes a moral victory. After trailing by 17 at halftime and by as much as 22, the Binghamton University men’s basketball team rallied in the second half but came up short to Marshall University, 69-55 in a non-conference game Monday night at the Events Center. The Bearcats went on a 20-6 run to start the second half and cut the deficit to 43-40 with 11:52 left in regulation. Freshman guard Dylan Talley sparked the rally with five points and a block. The Thundering Herd…
  • Student athletes get involved in charity events

    By Justin Tasch
pic At last night’s Binghamton University men’s basketball game, there were several events going on, including a book drive and “Sportsmanship Night.” These events were organized by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). SAAC President Bob Nolte explained SAAC’s mission. “The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee oversees student-athletes’ community service and well-being,” he said. “We represent the student-athletes’ voice to the administration. We’ve been doing different stuff throughout the years; last year we did St. Jude’s, this year we’re volunteering at a soup kitchen in Downtown Binghamton on Sundays, and we’re working on some other stuff as well.” Last night’s events focused on helping…
  • Arnett, freshmen shine at Cornell indoor relays

    By Holly Berkowitz
pic The Binghamton University indoor track and field team competed in its first meet of the season last Saturday at the Cornell University Indoor Invitational, breaking school and freshman records in the process. Though no team scores were kept at this meet, both the men and women’s teams impressed head coach Mike Thompson. “I thought the men and the women both looked really good,” Thompson said. “They competed hard, and there were a lot of great performances. Some people didn’t think they did as well as they should have, and I would disagree with that, but that’s a good thing. When…

December is here. People are trying to get a Dwyane Wade-like first step on holiday shopping, and warm, sunny days are as common as a Nets victory. The quarter mark of the season is almost here, so it’s time to see which teams have gotten off to a good start, which players are MVP candidates and which coaches are going to be drinking a lot come New Year’s. Starting with the locals … Lawrence Frank got an early holiday gift when the Nets let him walk away from the train wreck that is the team’s season so far. New Jersey…
