  • Silicone dreams: addicted to perfection

    By Lauren Howley
The next few months mark the time when the entertainment industry competes, not only through record sales and box office numbers, but for little gold statues. Switch on your television sometime in the next few weeks and chances are you will see hundreds of flawless actresses walking down red carpets in their size two designer gowns. While it’s true that perfect faces and perfect bodies have always been the norm at events like the Oscars and the Grammys, it’s highly unlikely that any of us will be able to roll out of bed at 8 a.m. and leave for class…
  • Newest gadget for home theater is in 3-D

    By Emily Wallerstein
We can all remember how cool it was the first time we saw Mickey Mouse conducting his band or “Honey I Shrunk the Kids” at Disney World. We shuffled into the theater with our parents and siblings, were handed our 3-D glasses and told not to put them on until the movie started and then finally there was magic. The images were exploding off the screen and right in front of our faces as we ducked so as not to get hit by extraneous objects, watching in amazement as the characters seemed to be speaking directly to us. • Lost: the beginning of the end

    By Will Oliver
Last Tuesday was the beginning of the end for “Lost,” whose Season 6 two-hour premiere stunned audiences around the globe. So much happened in the two-hour premiere. I had to catch my breath before I could even wrap my mind around the happenings of the episode titled LA X. The last thing that we saw from “Lost” was Juliet smacking the jughead, followed by a glowing white light. The bomb was supposed to send all of the losties back on the plane so that they never crashed on the island. Well, in one dimension, Jack, Kate, Sawyer and company all…

This seems to be happening more and more these days: You’re sitting in the movies watching tons of previews, when one catches your attention. The story line, the characters, the title — it all just seems way too familiar. Then you realize: Your favorite book is being turned into a movie. Now, for book lovers everywhere, the excitement of being able to put a face to a beloved character alone is thrilling enough. As usual, the preview is chocked full of gorgeous actors, intense action scenes and stirring plots. The anticipation is immense, and for those huge blockbusters such as…
  • “Othello” performance lacks length and impact

    By Erica Hill
“Othello,” arguably one of Shakespeare’s darkest tragedies, has no place for laughter. “Hamlet” has the overbearing and impractical Polonius and Hamlet’s strange antics to lessen the tension at times. “Romeo and Juliet” has the distinctly lighter tone of young love. And in the rest of the tragedies the audience at least gets the benefit of the villain suffering a terrible death. But “Othello” begins in the black of night and only continues to be dark, dark and darker. The Schorr Family Firehouse Stage in Johnson City is host to Goodwill Theatre Inc. and director Rosemary Hay’s production of William Shakespeare’s…
