  • Take a look around you

    By The Editorial Board
It’s easy to assume that because we’re students on a college campus, nothing dangerous can happen. As the tragedy that resulted in the death of a Binghamton University faculty member proved Friday, this is far from the case (see Page 1). It is true that college is somewhat of a bubble; many of us are still supported by our parents, and for the most part there is no need to worry about things like medical insurance or having a place to live. This doesn’t mean that we can afford to simply walk around oblivious to our surroundings; people on campus…
  • Don’t let stress happen to you

    By Tamaria Chan
Stress is an inevitable conundrum. We often think that if we carefully organize our priorities and try our best not to procrastinate, we’ll prevent the evil stress monster from entering our lives. But while managing our time may prevent chaos to an extent, we cannot control time itself. When life throws us those curveballs, we can’t always rearrange our lives or change the way we feel to reach equilibrium. For example, I’ve had several friends whose loved ones passed away this semester. How can we prepare for situations like these? We can’t. Although we may set up the pins perfectly,…
  • The holidays shouldn’t mean needless waste

    By Julie Razryadov
‘Tis the season to be wasteful. Consumers across the nation over are rushing to the stores to buy gadgets and trinkets and ribbons and rings. You must get something for everyone, even if that thing is fated to spend the next few years dusty on a shelf or dropped and forgotten in the crevice between the bed and the wall. It is the season where “Made in China” becomes the most widely distributed phrase in the country. Take a second this season to think your purchases through, a little beyond “shiny,” “soft” and “office gift.” Think about what it took…
  • Professors have responsibilities, too

    By Marina Gaft
When students register for a course through BU Brain, attend the first day of class and look over the syllabus, they are essentially signing a contract with the professor — to fulfill his or her expectations or suffer the consequences of receiving a bad grade. But shouldn’t this contract be two-sided? By accepting the responsibility of teaching a class, isn’t the professor also accepting the duty to fulfill his obligations as a teacher? It doesn’t always seem like it. There are certain expectations students have that are sometimes lost in translation, or simply ignored. And as students, we don’t have…
  • Twilight vs. Dark Knight should not be happening

    By Leah Schiano
Now, I like “Twilight” as much as the next girl, but “New Moon” beating “The Dark Knight” at the box office is kind of ridiculous. “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” launched into theaters to thousands upon thousands of drooling teenage girls. Those devoted teenage girls also launched the film into the spot of highest-grossing movie in a single day. Yes, that’s right. I said day. By the opening night of the film, “New Moon” had grossed $72 million, which beat “The Dark Knight’s” record, according to Boxofficemojo.com. It also helps that the movie got $26 million in the midnight preview…
  • Pregnancy impacts lives more than one may think

    By Jennifer Haimowitz
For many girls, one of the scariest things to imagine is getting pregnant before becoming a married adult. Over time, society has taken on a view that treats the idea of women having children at a young age as taboo. It is ironic that giving life, the most precious and valued thing on this earth, should become one of the greatest misdoings a girl can do, if she does so before society believes she is meant to. In today’s world, becoming pregnant before reaching an appropriate age can be met with varying reactions of every extreme, from strong support to…
