  • Phillips’ 3 homers highlight split with Bonnies

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic The Binghamton University softball team fought hard to try to win a doubleheader with St. Bonaventure and Jessica Phillips was doing her best to help the team do just that. What resulted was Phillips’ own personal home run derby. Freshman outfielder Phillips launched three pitches out of the park in the two-game set as the Bearcats (22-16, 6-9 America East) took the opener 7-5 but fell in the nightcap 8-6 at home against St. Bonaventure (10-23). In Game 1, Phillips finished 3-for-4 with two homers, three runs and four RBI. The run support allowed freshman pitcher Rhoda Marsteller to preserve…
  • BU gets 13-12 win; playoff hopes still alive

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic With its playoff hopes on the line, the Binghamton University men’s lacrosse team refused to let its season dwindle away without a chance to enter its seventh consecutive conference tournament. The Bearcats (4-9, 1-3 AE) nearly blew another late lead, but hung on to save their playoff hopes with a 13-12 victory at the University of Hartford (3-10, 0-4 AE) on Saturday for its first conference win of the year. Curiously, the Bearcats were beaten in nearly every statistical category besides the one that mattered — the score. Binghamton lost the shot margin (46-30), ground ball battle (40-33) and faceoffs…
  • NBA Playoffs 2010: East

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
No. 1 Cleveland Cavaliers vs. No. 8 Chicago Bulls There is only one way to look at this series: With the Cavs widely expected to run to the NBA Finals, some poor team had to be the sacrificial lamb of Cleveland’s first-round demolition. The Bulls put forth a valiant effort to slip into the playoffs, taking advantage of Toronto’s loss of Chris Bosh to leapfrog the Raptors in the standings. But Cleveland has won 20 more games than Chicago has, and while the Bulls have some good years ahead of them, this season ends right here. The Cavs are way…
  • Punishment in sports will not alter the conduct of athletes

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
Suspensions and fines are handed down in professional sports quite often, sometimes for illegal off-the-field conduct, other times for on-the-court brawls. But not all suspensions are created equal. When are these punishments truly warranted? This is a broad and complicated issue. It is also difficult to provide any kind of sweeping application regarding the issue because it should be taken on a case-by-case basis. But generally speaking, committing a crime off the field will get you fined or suspended, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Citizens of any profession are expected to stay out of legal trouble. But we…
  • Men’s lax slays Siena; 8 Bearcats score on Saints

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic On the heels of a three-game losing skid, the Binghamton University men’s lacrosse team held on in the second overtime for a 9-8 victory over the Siena Saints, regaining vital momentum for its upcoming conference slate of matches. The Bearcats (3-7, 0-1 AE) took down Siena (5-4) at the Bearcats Sports Complex on Wednesday despite starting three freshmen in the six offensive slots. But the youthful lineup, including leading scorer freshman Matt Springer, kept its composure and gave Binghamton its first win since March 13. “We were poised on both ends of the field,” Binghamton head coach Ed Stephenson said.…
  • Norris looks to move past controversial year

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
In the aftermath of the most tumultuous year in the history of Binghamton University sports, the athletic department has been heavily scrutinized by students, the community and even national newspapers. Interim athletic director Jim Norris has heard it all — he inherited his position in the midst of a storm of controversy. More than six months have passed since the controversy began, and the University has seen its fair share of bumps in the road. But Norris and the athletic department are striving to get Binghamton University back on the straight and narrow path. GROUND ZERO The effort began in…
  • Raske dismissed from team

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
Former leading scorer and All-Conference selection Dani Raske has been released from the Binghamton University women’s soccer team. Head coach Sarah McClellan declined to discuss the exact reason for the dismissal. She stated that it was not a behavioral issue, but said that Raske was “not a good fit.” “Our program is moving in a different direction,” McClellan said. After sitting out as an injury redshirt during her first year of school, Raske became a big part of the Bearcats’ offense during her first year of play. She started all 18 games at various positions and led the team in…
  • Bearcats still shine in my eyes; administration has work to do

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
In my freshman year, I watched a young Division I basketball program ascend to the top of its conference for the first time and play in the NCAA tournament against one of the most storied programs in the history of college basketball. Now, here I sit in my sophomore year, watching the ashes smolder. The rise and fall of the Binghamton University men’s basketball program almost seems like it belongs in a movie. To top it all off, there are countless unanswered questions swirling around the ruins of what was once a Cinderella story. The mystery surrounding the scandal makes…
  • Men’s lacrosse loses to Drexel; Springer nets two goals

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic After a momentous win to start the season, the Binghamton University men’s lacrosse team hasn’t been able to rediscover the flair that put it over the top, and another slow start dropped the team into a three-game losing skid. The Bearcats (1-3) fell to the Drexel Dragons (3-1) 12-7 on Saturday at the Bearcats Sports Complex. It was Binghamton’s second straight loss on its home turf, which the team will not play on again until March 30 following a three-game road trip. Binghamton started slow once again, allowing Drexel to jump out to a 7-2 lead before junior goalie Dan…
  • AE Special 2010: Marqus Blakely feature

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
For years, Marqus Blakely has been a source of power and leadership at the University of Vermont. He was named the best player in America East two consecutive times, and this season he leads his team in every statistical category. But one thing is missing from Blakely’s repertoire: an America East crown. But before his journey ends, a portrait of where it began illustrates a portrait of a successful basketball player and an exceptional student-athlete. THE BEGINNING OF MARQUS BLAKELY His quest started in New Jersey, where Blakely played high school basketball in Metuchen. He averaged 19.4 points, 10 rebounds…
  • Men’s lax returns with experience

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
Despite losing a key field leader and finishing last season with just three wins, the Binghamton University men’s lacrosse team may be more experienced than ever this year, and the Bearcats will look to translate that experience into victories. The squad’s key returners include the three senior captains: midfielder Drew Wichmann, defender Griffin McLoughlin and attack Jeff Rurey. The team also returns dynamic scorers in seniors Andy Cook and Steve Carlson, first-team All-Conference defender Derrick Danieu, and All-Rookie defender Ben Waldron. “We’re very athletic at the midfield, we’re very skilled at the attack,” said Binghamton head coach Ed Stephenson. “We…
  • Bearcats stun No. 20 Colgate with 7-6 win

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic Last season, the Binghamton University men’s lacrosse team opened the season with four straight losses and dropped eight of its first nine games. But on Saturday, the Bearcats took down a nationally-ranked team to send a powerful message that this season might mark a very different chapter in the history of the program. The Bearcats overcame an early deficit and held off a third-quarter flurry from the Colgate Red Raiders to defeat the No. 20 team in the nation by a score of 7-6 at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The win marked the program’s first victory over a nationally ranked…
  • Women’s hoops drops three straight games

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic The Binghamton University women’s basketball team has had a rough February; after three consecutive losses, the Bearcats have dropped five of six games this month. But with tournament play coming up, anything can happen for this Bearcats squad. The Bearcats (9-18, 5-9 America East) fell at home to defending conference champion University of Vermont (21-5, 11-2 AE) on Saturday by a score of 64-39. Binghamton was undone by both poor shooting on the offensive end (28 percent for the game) and sharp shooting from the Catamounts. Vermont guard Courtnay Pilypaitis had a perfect-shooting day from the floor, including four 3-pointers,…
  • Women’s hoops falls to Stony Brook

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic The Binghamton University women’s basketball team struggled with rebounding and with getting its leading scorer the ball, leading to a 74-60 loss on the road at the hands of Stony Brook (7-16, 5-6 America East) on Saturday, dropping its third consecutive road game. Senior guard and leading scorer Erica Carter, who is averaging just under 14 points per game, was held to just 8 points in the loss for the Bearcats (8-15, 4-6 AE). With Carter leading the way, the team had been averaging a conference-best 7.5 3-pointers per game, but shot just 4-of-13 at Stony Brook. “In the last…
  • Bearcats set ti face ‘Wolves in attempt to complete sweep

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
The Binghamton University women’s basketball team is in its final month of the season, fighting to hold on to the No. 4 seed in the conference. But Stony Brook is right behind the Bearcats, and they are seeking revenge for a loss at the Events Center earlier this season. The Bearcats (8-14, 4-5 America East) are scheduled to face off on the road against the Seawolves (6-16, 4-6 AE) on Saturday, and a win for Stony Brook would propel it past Binghamton for the No. 4 spot in the conference. The Bearcats are coming off a 79-56 defeat at the…
  • Ryan’s Super Bowl Pick

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
OK, so I like both of these teams. The Colts need to protect Peyton Manning in this game. He can take a hit and he can get rid of the ball quickly, but if he gets hit enough times, he will break down. I just don’t see it happening. The Saints pounded Brett Favre, but come on, he’s an old man. Manning should be able to operate as well as he always does. Brees will need to play the game of his life to keep up because let’s face it: Neither of these two defenses should be able to stop…
  • Carter leads Bearcats to back-to-back wins

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic Using its dynamic 3-point shooter, an effective zone defense and key rebounds in crunch time, the Binghamton University women’s basketball team was able to stave off a late Albany comeback and secure its fourth conference victory. The Bearcats (8-13, 4-4 America East) held off the last-place Great Danes (7-14, 0-8 AE) on Saturday afternoon, clinching a 65-60 victory at the Events Center. The win gave Binghamton its first back-to-back victories of the season. Senior guard Erica Carter led the attack for the Bearcats, hitting on five of her 12 3-point attempts and finishing with a game-high 21 points. Sophomore forward…
  • Quarterbacks stole the show during championship weekend

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
The Super Bowl matchup is finally set! I’m stoked to watch Peyton Manning take on Drew Brees. Here’s a brief report card on how some star players performed in the championship games this past weekend. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS Peyton Manning: A. Darrelle Revis successfully shut down Reggie Wayne and the Jets’ defense shut down Dallas Clark (those two combined for 200 catches, 2,370 yards and 20 touchdowns in the regular season). So how the hell did Manning throw for 377 yards and three scores? He continued to utilize young Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon, he didn’t throw an interception and he…
  • Pre-draft favorites don’t always pan out

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
I don’t know about you, but I learned a lot of tough lessons about fantasy football this year: pre-draft rankings, draft strategy, waiver pickups … the list goes on and on. Here are some of those things we may have discovered this season. (Pre-draft rankings are based on Sports Illustrated publication, and fantasy points and final rankings are based on ESPN standard scoring league). PRE-DRAFT RANKINGS: No fantasy publication is going to have it all right when it comes to ranking players. There’s gonna be some good calls (Aaron Rodgers) and some bad calls (Steve Slaton), but it’s all about…
  • Ryan’s fantasy corner: Rodgers best player overall

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
As the fantasy football season sadly comes to an end, it’s time to hand out my first Fantasy Awards. If your team is still active in the playoffs, I wish you all the best luck; I too will be fighting for my life in the coming weeks. If we’ve learned anything this year, it’s that we really know nothing about this whole thing. We could play according to the matchups, and sometimes it doesn’t work. We could count on a guy’s consistency only to see him suddenly vanish from the fantasy radar. The only advice I can give you in…
  • Carter scores career high 35 in BU rout

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic Against Niagara, Erica Carter scored 20 points only to see the team’s 15-point lead evaporate en route to a Bearcats loss. So Carter decided to kick it up a notch. This time, the Bearcats would not let victory slip away. Carter erupted for 35 points on 9-for-13 shooting from behind the arc to help Binghamton (2-5) overcome Bryant (3-5) on the road Monday, 75-59. The senior guard finished just three points shy of the all-time single-game record for points. Her nine threes set a school record, and it was the most points a Bearcat has scored since 2002. Binghamton’s overall…
  • Ryan’s NFL Picks: Week 12

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
LOCK: PITTSBURGH (PK) over Oakland: No spread?! This is a must-win game for the Steelers after their Monday night loss to the rival Ravens. In order to remain in strong playoff contention, the Steelers need to win most, if not all of their remaining games, and a loss to the lowly Raiders would be irreparable. San Diego (-13.0) over CLEVELAND: The Chargers are on a tear, and they’re trying to distance themselves from the Broncos for AFC West supremacy. Cleveland is 1-10, a thoroughly embarrassing mess of a football team. But a 1-10 team has to pull out a win…
  • Women’s hoops tops Siena for first win of season

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic Staring at the threat of a fifth consecutive loss to begin the season, the Binghamton University women’s basketball team refused to let victory slip away this time. The Bearcats used clutch free throws in overtime and a career night from junior guard Jackie Ward to earn its first win of the season, a 76-70 victory over Siena College (0-6) on Wednesday night. Binghamton (1-4) tallied its highest point total of the year in the winning effort. Ward dropped a career-high 26 points on 10-of-23 shooting and added six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Ward had scored just six points…
  • Ryan’s Fantasy corner: time to bail on Romo

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
With another week down in fantasy land, playoffs for most leagues are right around the corner. I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty nervous. Last year, I remember steadily holding the top spot in a league before falling in the playoffs thanks to a Randy Moss-Wes Welker tandem domination of the Raiders. Anything can happen, and in these crucial moments, you can either make the playoffs or fall out of contention. Here’s some analysis on the past two weeks of action with a look ahead to the next few critical games with some players that you might be debating…
  • Bearcats still winless; looking for change at Siena

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic After a winless November, the Binghamton University women’s basketball team is taking the lessons it has learned into a new month as the players continue to search for their first victory of the year. After dropping its home opener to St. Bonaventure University, the Bearcats (0-4) continued their season with an 87-74 loss against Syracuse University at the Carrier Dome on Nov. 22, their first road test of the season. Strong shooting from the Orange doomed the Bearcats. Syracuse shot 51.5 percent for the game, and hit 14 of 31 3-pointers to shoot 45.1 percent from behind the arc. Senior…
  • Ryan’s Week 11 NFL picks

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
LOCK: Cincinnati (-9.5) over OAKLAND: The Raiders somehow pulled out a win against the Eagles and played close against the Chargers twice. I’m so scared of this one, but I think the Bengals can roll to a double-digit victory. I worry about them because they’ll be flying high after taking out the Steelers for a second time, so will they underestimate the Raiders? But I can’t get over how terrible the Raiders usually are, and the Bengals are fighting to distance themselves from Pittsburgh and Baltimore in the AFC North. San Diego (PK) over DENVER: The Chargers are coming off…
  • Lessons learned from boycotting Buffalo Bills

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
On Oct. 11, I wrote a commentary in which I suggested drastic measures, out of my frustrations with the Buffalo Bills after a thoroughly embarrassing 6-3 loss to the lowly Cleveland Browns. I said, “I will not watch the Buffalo Bills play, wear my [Marshawn] Lynch jersey or support them in any way, shape or form until [Dick] Jauron is no longer the head coach.” So Nov. 17 was a happy day. Jauron was fired and Bills Nation collectively rejoiced. I held to my word; I didn’t watch a game and I stashed my jersey in the depths of my…
  • Ryan’s fantasy corner: Week 10

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
First, a quick word on the Sunday night game that everyone’s been talking about. Every sportswriter in the country feels the need to weigh in on Bill Belichick’s decision last night to go for it on fourth-and-two from his own 28 yard line, up 34-28 with no timeouts and two minutes left. Those who agree with the call cite the fact that Peyton Manning was going to score, whether it was from the Pats’ 30 or the Colts’ 10; he was that good last night, as he always is. But I think this was the wrong call, and here’s why:…
  • Ryan’s NFL picks: Week 10

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
LOCK: New Orleans (-13.5) over ST. LOUIS: Big spread, but I’m not worried. The Rams suck so badly, and New Orleans is 8-0. I fear that the Saints will let the unbeaten thing get to them and they will lose a game that they shouldn’t lose this year, but it’s not gonna be this week. Denver (-3.5) over WASHINGTON: The Broncos’ 6-0 start was followed by two AFC North beatdowns to bring them back down to Earth. They’re not about to let a terrible 2-6 Redskins team make it three in a row. Denver needs a win here with San…
  • Casares’ progress propels program; ends collegiate career with stellar season

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic The Binghamton University women’s soccer team has seen drastic improvement over the past few years, and one important team element has been there through it all: Amanda Casares. She has grown, too — as an athlete, a leader and a student. The senior midfielder and team captain garnered multiple conference awards and led the Bearcats to the America East championship game this year, where her career came to a close. But the game began for Casares at age four in a muddy grass field in Rahway, N.J. From there she moved up to the club level and then to the…

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
Week 9 is in the books. Here are a few of this week’s fantasy football juggernauts and weaklings. Wow, how many different ways can I say studs and duds? Anyway, got any feedback to this weekly fantasy analysis? Shoot an email to sports@bupipedream.com, and if you’ve got something good to say, I’ll give you some space in my article next week! MATT RYAN — After starting the season with three of four dynamic performances, Ryan has fallen off; over the past four games, he has more than 200 yards only once, has thrown for more interceptions (eight) than touchdowns (six).…
  • McEachron: improving through experience

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic Senior goalkeeper Jen McEachron has seen a variety of situations in her time at Binghamton University. She learned the ropes as a freshman, started every minute in goal as a junior, and split time in net as a senior. But as McEachron has developed and improved, so has Binghamton’s women’s soccer program, and her career ended at the pinnacle of conference play: the title game. Amidst changes in coaching, lineups, and playing time, McEachron has continued to work at improving her game as an athlete and her education as a student. McEachron began playing soccer at age five and started…
  • Ryan’s NFL picks: Week 9

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
LOCK: Green Bay (-9.5) over TAMPA BAY Winless Tampa Bay goes up against the Packers and Aaron Rodgers, who is now the No. 1-ranked fantasy quarterback in points this season (woohoo for having him on my team!). Green Bay beat the woeful Lions and Browns in back-to-back weeks by a combined score of 57-3. The Bucs don’t stand a chance. Looking ahead at their schedule, 0-16 is really starting to look like a plausible possibility. ATLANTA (-10.0) over Washington The Falcons are a dominant offensive squad when they’re firing on all cylinders, and I don’t see any way that Washington…
  • Growth of women’s soccer takes it to the finals

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
Change is inevitable for any Division I athletic team. Players come and go, coaches are hired and fired and the landscape of the program is continually altered. The greatest programs absorb the changes and don’t miss a beat. The cellar-dwellers aren’t quite as fortunate and never really rise to prominence. Somewhere in between, there exist the teams that have been building up to great success. Here is where we find the Binghamton University women’s soccer team. From last year to this year, the team has seen many challenges and many new athletes on the roster, and those new players have…
  • Fantasy football Week 8: Eli’s falling off the charts

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
This was quite a week for football games: the Broncos are no longer unbeaten; the once 5-0 Giants are suddenly third in the NFC East; the Titans and Rams are no longer winless; and no one could stop talking about Brett Favre beating the Packers at Lambeau. The story lines were compelling this weekend, and the fantasy lines were just as irritating as usual. Here are your starting lineup’s shining stars and biggest mistakes, and what to look for moving forward. STEVE SLATON — OK, I remained confident on Slaton this year. The problems with fumbling (seven times after Sunday)…
  • Bearcats to host AE semifinal as no.2 seed

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
Before the season began, the coaches of the America East projected the Binghamton University women’s soccer team to be the fifth-best team in the conference. The Bearcats had other plans. After Binghamton’s 1-0 win at New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon, the Bearcats achieved the second-best record in the America East (6-2) to secure a first-round bye and a second-round home game in the upcoming AE tournament. The Bearcats (9-6-1 overall) won nine of their last 12 games to finish the regular season. The 6-2 conference record is also the best AE win percentage that the team has had in Division…
  • Fantasy football Week 7: Witten’s value declining

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
Through the ups and downs of fantasy football, if you’ve been reading these commentaries, you know mine have mostly been downs — until I started Miles Austin in all three of my leagues this week. I’m finally a happy camper — for now — but how did you do this week? Here again are a few men that made you smile and made you tear your hair out in Week 7. MATT FORTE — He was pretty high on a lot of our draft boards, but Forté simply hasn’t paid the dividends that we were all hoping for. He’s had…
  • Ryan’s NFL picks: Week 7

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
LOCK: New England (-14.5) over Tampa Bay: After the Patriots unnecessarily piled on the points in the second half against the Titans when the game was clearly already over, we’ve seen what they can do to a winless football team. Tampa Bay has to get a win eventually, but there’s no way it comes against the Patriots. The game is in London, so it’s a long-distance trip, but not even the worst jet lag could save the Bucs in this one. Philadelphia (-7.0) over WASHINGTON: Last week, I was so sure of Philly over Oakland. So what the hell am…
  • NBA ‘09-‘10 Preview: Atlantic

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
ATLANTIC DIVISION 1. BOSTON CELTICS — The Celtics are a preseason favorite to make a deep run into the playoffs, as their starting roster is pretty much identical to last year’s. The differences are on the bench: Rasheed Wallace and Marquis Daniels were big additions to this team. If they can play disciplined basketball and the rest of the bench steps up like it has in previous years, the Big Three of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen will get ample rest and the team will be near the top of the Eastern Conference. 2. TORONTO RAPTORS — After…
  • Bearcats rally in second half to defeat UVM

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic The Binghamton University women’s soccer team found itself in a difficult place in Thursday’s game: down 1-0 in the second half to a University of Vermont team that had won just one match all year. How did the team respond? Well, let’s just say that the Bearcats left no doubt about which was the best team on the field. Binghamton (8-6-1) used an 18-minute blitz of offense to take down Vermont 3-1 on Thursday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex for its eighth win in 11 games. The win gave the Bearcats a 5-2 America East record, and another win…
  • Norris details direction for Athletic Department

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
Interim athletic director Jim Norris shed some light on his vision for the future of Binghamton University Athletic Department during a press conference Friday night before Late Nite Madness. While details on what’s to come for men’s basketball head coach Kevin Broadus, who is on a paid leave of absence for an indefinite amount of time, were not disclosed, Norris introduced interim head coach Mark Macon, who expressed optimism for the days ahead. “I’m very humbled to have been named the head coach of Binghamton University,” Macon said. “We have a great staff; any one of us could have done…
  • Bearcats celebrate Senior Day with win

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic Last season, the Binghamton University women’s soccer team had to hang its playoff fate on an overtime regular season finale. This year, the Bearcats can breathe a little easier for the final week of the season. Binghamton (7-6-1, 4-2 America East) clinched its sixth consecutive America East tournament berth with a 2-0 victory over the University of Maryland, Baltimore County on Sunday afternoon. The Bearcats have two regular-season games remaining in which they will try to achieve a higher playoff seed and possibly a home playoff game. In addition to celebrating the postseason berth, Sunday’s game was Senior Day for…
  • Fantasy Week 6: Schaub leads NFL in TDs

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
So what have we learned, citizens of the fantasy football world? I’ve learned that even when you have a good week (which I finally did), you can still get smacked. This week, I counted seven total starting players that were on a team for me in one league and on my opponent’s team in another league. So I won a matchup because of Randy Moss, and I lost a matchup because of Randy Moss. That’s just unfair. I also had Steve Slaton, Larry Fitzgerald and Andre Johnson work two different ways for me. Quite literally, success brought me failure. I…
  • Ryan’s NFL picks

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
LOCK: Philadelphia (-14.0) over OAKLAND In a tough slate of Week 6 games, this one is a sure thing. The Eagles have handily beaten every bad team that they’ve faced this year, and their only loss on the year was to the powerful Saints. Philly will continue to roll against a Raiders team in shambles. ATLANTA (-3.5) over Chicago When Atlanta’s offense is firing on all cylinders, it’s so difficult to compete against. But Chicago’s defense is better than average, and I’m not sure if Atlanta’s defense can contain Jay Cutler and Matt Forte. I think I’m gonna regret this…
  • Women’s soccer tries for fourth conference victory

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
The Binghamton University women’s soccer team already has a better conference standing than it did in the 2008 season. But with three games to go, anything can happen to either propel Binghamton to the top of the conference or drop it out of playoff contention. The America East Conference playoff picture is about to come into focus in the upcoming weeks. The Bearcats have a 3-2 record in AE play and a 6-6-1 record overall. Last season, the Bearcats were 3-5 in the conference. Binghamton has claimed victory over the University at Albany and the University of Hartford, both on…
  • LATE NITE: the Madness returns

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic Binghamton University’s annual Late Nite Madness is set to kick off tonight at 10 p.m. in the Events Center. The event introduces the Bearcats’ men’s and women’s basketball teams and includes various competitions, festivities and performances for students to enjoy. Late Nite Madness is a joint effort of the athletic department, Late Nite Binghamton and the Student Association, and will be free to all students. Free T-shirts will be handed out starting at 9:30 p.m., when the doors open. “During the 90-minute event, both basketball teams will take part in a Shooting Stars competition, followed by members of the men’s…
  • UPenn shuts out women’s soccer

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic The Binghamton University women’s soccer team hit a snag before its final slate of conference matches, dropping its first-ever match against the University of Pennsylvania by a score of 3-0. The Bearcats had won six of their past eight before the loss. Penn, playing at home, opened the scoring on a one-timer at the 6:44 mark. Soon thereafter, the Bearcats had two opportunities to even the score. The first came from freshman forward Jamie Holliday, who hit the crossbar in the 16th minute, and the second came from sophomore midfielder Mary DeWitte, whose shot banked off the post at the…
  • From a fan to the team: Get your stuff together

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
On Sunday, an NFL team completed two total passes, had fewer first downs and less time of possession than its opponent and didn’t score a touchdown. The team won the football game. Congratulations, Cleveland. I have never been more embarrassed. Buffalo Bills fans are accustomed to coming really close to winning and then blowing it at the end. We’re used to games like the season-opening heartbreaker at New England. We are used to having so much potential that it always seems like we’re saying, “This is the year.” Fatefully, it never is. But what I am not used to is…
  • NFL fantasy week five: Give Edwards some time

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
I don’t know why I continue to do this. I expend so much time and effort for my fantasy football teams, and for what? To lose eight of my past nine total matchups? Hopefully the fantasy gods are being kinder to you than they are to me, and here are the weekly studs and duds of fantasy football. MILES AUSTIN — I’ve never liked Roy Williams as Dallas’s No. 1 receiver, so I faced a choice with my lineup decimated from bye weeks: do I start Patrick Crayton or Miles Austin? By now I’m sure you could guess that I…
  • Ryan’s Picks: Week 5

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
LOCK: Pittsburgh (-10.5) over DETROIT The Lions will likely be without both QB Matthew Stafford and WR Calvin Johnson, leaving them only RB Kevin Smith as an offensive weapon. He will probably still do well, but the Lions aren’t going to stop the Steelers’ offense in this one. PHILADELPHIA (-14.5) over Tampa Bay The Bucs are a team in shambles, and the Eagles have been playing extremely well without Donovan McNabb. He will be back Sunday, but no matter who they play at quarterback, the Bucs will be hard-pressed to score more than once against Philly’s stout defense. Minnesota (-10.0)…
  • NHL team-by-team playoff predictions

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
The 2009-10 NHL season is officially underway, and it couldn’t come soon enough. There’s something about a hit in hockey that football just can’t give you, and it’s good to have it back. Here’s a team-by-team analysis of who I project will make the playoffs this season. EASTERN CONFERENCE 1. PITTSBURGH PENGUINS — What a year for the Pens last year. Despite a tumultuous regular season and fourth-place finish in the Eastern Conference, they went on to the Stanley Cup and beat the Red Wings in Detroit to claim the cup in Game 7. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin comprise…
  • Pape nets winner in Hartford shutout

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic The Binghamton University women’s soccer team overwhelmed the University of Hartford Hawks on Thursday night with a barrage of shots and offensive opportunities. They only found the back of the net once, but it was enough to defeat the conference rival Hawks 1-0 at the Bearcats Sports Complex for their fifth win in seven games. Binghamton reeled off 17 shots, a season high, while Hartford amassed just seven. Ten different Bearcats had a shot in the contest. “We really got numbers forward nicely,” said Binghamton head coach Sarah McClellan. “We talked about it, the girls executed it and really started…
  • Week 4: Manning now top QB

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
Week 4 in the NFL revealed more in the realm of the fantasy world. Usually, I learn that I suck at fantasy football; this week was no exception. Here are some thoughts on the winners and losers this week. PEYTON MANNING — Guess who’s the No. 1 quarterback in fantasy leagues? Yeah, two weeks ago, and for the entire offseason, it was Drew Brees. Not anymore. Manning has thrown for 300-plus yards in all four games and nine passing touchdowns (just as many as Brees) this season to lead the Colts, who are the only 4-0 team that no one…
  • Ryan’s Picks: Week 4

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
LOCK: New York Giants (-8.5) over KANSAS CITY The Chiefs haven’t won a football game since Nov. 30 of last year — including the preseason. The Giants are on a roll this season, and they had no trouble handling the struggling Bucs last week. This game should be closer, but the Giants won’t lose. Then again, the Giants started 11-1 last year, and does anyone remember who that one loss was against? The Browns, in Week 6. I sure hope for the sake of my picks record thus far that the Giants don’t blow this one. CHICAGO (-10.0) over Detroit…
  • Hold off on passing judgment right now

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
We’ve all seen the news regarding the Binghamton University men’s basketball team. We know that we lost a significant portion of the team that gave the Bearcats their first NCAA tournament berth. We know that Emanuel “Tiki” Mayben was arrested on drug charges in his hometown of Troy. We know that Joel Thirer recently stepped down from his position as athletic director. But listen, guys: that’s pretty much all we know. We can all have our theories about what happened, or what caused the dismissal of D.J. Rivera, Malik Alvin, David Fine, Paul Crosby and Corey Chandler. But the smoking…
  • Stenta’s 34th career shutout stifles Big Red

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic If your soccer team is hoping that a penalty kick will even the score of a game and breathe new momentum into your squad, you’d better hope you’re not playing against Jason Stenta. Stenta became the first Division I Bearcats goalkeeper to stop a penalty kick, helping the Bearcats win a road match against Cornell University on Wednesday by a score of 2-0, despite poor weather conditions on the field. The match was delayed 30 minutes due to the inclement weather, and the field was left in difficult condition to play on. “We had some rain before the game, so…
  • NFL fantasy week two analysis: Chris Johnson surprises many

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
Another Sunday, another fantasy headache. Once again, here are some fantasy commodities that did well, and others that made us all kick ourselves for granting them a starting spot in the lineup. CHRIS JOHNSON — Whoa! Johnson had the best fantasy day of his career, scoring three touchdowns on 284 all-purpose yards. Surprisingly, backup running back LenDale White has followed his 15-touchdown season with 14 rushes for 53 yards in two games. What I thought might be a timeshare has turned out to be just the opposite. RYAN GRANT — Grant has quietly become one of the most consistent fantasy…
  • Freshman Holliday scores twice in BU win

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic In front of a home crowd of more than 200 fans, the Binghamton University women’s soccer team won its third consecutive game with a 3-1 victory over the visiting Temple University Owls on Friday evening. Freshman forward Jamie Holliday continued her stellar play by scoring the Bearcats’ first two goals in the game. For her efforts, she was named America East Rookie of the Week, announced on Monday afternoon. “[Holliday] has the ability to really be dangerous through the back line,” said Bearcats head coach Sarah McClellan. “I don’t know that people are necessarily noting her and making adjustments for…
  • Week 2 - Ryan Ganzenmuller

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
LOCK: Pittsburgh (-3.0) over CHICAGO I got absolutely butchered in last week’s picks, and rightfully so. I hope my picks this week aren’t embarrassing, but this is hard stuff. By my watch, this is the only lock that I can predict. I don’t like Chicago because Jay Cutler’s infantile meltdowns are never going to stop, but also because the Pittsburgh pass rush will wreak havoc on him. Brian Urlacher is out for the year, but the Steelers will be missing Troy Polamalu too. The difference is that the other 10 guys on Pittsburgh’s defense are still phenomenal, and that’s more…
  • Women’s soccer to try for three straight

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic The Binghamton University women’s soccer team has played five of its first six games on the road, and although it returned from Western New York with two solid road wins last weekend, it’s about time it played on the green grass of the Bearcats Sports Complex once again. The team is scheduled to face off against the Temple University Owls at the Bearcats Sports Complex tonight. The Owls are fresh off a 4-3 win over Bearcats conference rival University at Albany, bringing the squad to a 4-1-1 record. Out of the six matches, only one was played on the road,…
  • Women’s soccer bounces back with two wins

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic Score. The Binghamton University women’s soccer team couldn’t do it in its first four games. That all changed in the team’s two weekend games; this time, it was their opponents who couldn’t score. The Bearcats took down Niagara on Friday, 2-0, for its first win (and first scoring) of the season, then blanked Buffalo on Sunday, 1-0, the team’s third shutout. The Bearcats have allowed just two goals in the past five games. Goalkeepers Jen McEachron and Erin Iman split time in each game and made a combined total of 13 saves over the weekend. “Our team played extremely well,”…
  • Bizzare opening week for fantasy football fanatics

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
It seems like every week is brutal in the land of fantasy football; who you started, who you didn’t, who gets hurt. This year, I have three teams, making my life all the more maddening. Nevertheless, here are some of the best and worst performers from a fantasy standpoint from Sunday’s NFL action. DREW BREES — Last night, I received a text from a friend that I am matched up against in Week 1 that said, “I’m going to shank Drew Brees in the right bicep.” That’s the kind of week he had; Brees salvaged horrendous performances by my other…
  • Despite right defense, ‘Cats winless

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic Despite significant improvements over the past few games, the Binghamton University women’s soccer team is still without a goal, and therefore without a win, over its first four games. On the road Friday, the Bearcats kept Cornell at bay despite a blitz of second-half shots, but could not find the back of the net themselves, as the game ended in a 0-0 tie after two overtime periods. The Big Red reeled off 14 shots in the second half and overtime periods, but junior goalkeeper Erin Iman made five saves to help keep the home team scoreless. Despite the lack of…
  • Bearcats struggle away from home

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic It’s going to be a tough road for the Binghamton University women’s soccer team this year. The Bearcats began their long schedule of away matches this weekend with losses at University of Delaware, 3-0, and St. Joseph’s University, 1-0. “Delaware was a good team,” said Bearcats’ head coach Sarah McClellan. “They were able to kind of lock us into our end, which is why they got the goals that they did.” The Bearcats were outshot 18-10 in the contest. Freshman forward Kerry Sullivan had a team-high three shots, while fellow freshman Carly Kirschner and sophomore Taylor Kucharski each had two…
  • Bearcats’ roseter features 13 new faces

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic Just two years ago the Binghamton University women’s soccer team won only three of its 19 total games. Now the team is coming off an eight-win season and hoping to rise into contention for America East conference prominence. With a noticeably young roster and nearly twice as many road games as home games, the task will not be easy for the Bearcats. BU head coach Sarah McClellan is confident that her young squad is ready to be a competitor in the America East, as well as on a national stage. One difference between this year and last year is the…
  • More events planned for Bearcats faithful

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic You don’t have to be on a team roster to play a role in Binghamton University athletics. Sometimes, you don’t even have to leave your dorm room. There are many opportunities for students to participate in free events that can be fun, supportive of our beloved sports teams and helpful to your career aspirations. The first big event in the fall will be the annual homecoming celebration in October. And if you think that a homecoming weekend without a football team is strange or even impossible, think again. “[First], we have the big tailgate which is going to be Oct.…
  • Male Athlete of the Year Nominees

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
MEN’S AWARDS * Player of the Year: Josh Patterson — The 184-pound junior became Binghamton University’s first All-American wrestler, finishing seventh at the NCAA Championships. He finished with a 46-6 season record, including a school record of 22 pins. D.J. Rivera — Rivera led the men’s basketball team to its first-ever NCAA tournament berth, scoring 20 points to lead the America East Conference while grabbing 6.5 rebounds per game in the process. Joanel Lopez — This track and field athlete finished his brilliant career by placing second in the shot put at the AE championships, good enough to qualify for…
  • Men’s lacrosse loses AE semifinal

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic The last stand of senior goalie Larry Kline was a heroic one that included 13 saves and scoring a first period goal. But the Bearcats were still dealt one of the most heartbreaking losses in the program’s history, a defeat that was eerily familiar in circumstance. “It was like deja vu,” Kline said. “Same kid, same play, different side of the net. It’s heartbreaking.” The Binghamton men’s lacrosse team fell to the top-seeded Maryland-Baltimore County in the America East semifinal on Wednesday night in double overtime, 9-8, after a goal by UMBC attack Ryan Smith 55 seconds into the second…
  • Six Bearcats honored with AE accolades

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
Three Binghamton University men’s lacrosse players were named to America East All-Conference teams on Tuesday, and three additional Bearcats were named to the AE Academic Team for the 2009 season. Sophomore defender Derrick Danieu was named to the AE All-Conference First Team for the first time. Danieu started 13 games for the Bearcats and scooped up 21 ground balls this season. He was named to the AE All-Rookie Team in 2008, compiling 12 ground balls in 12 games. Senior midfielder and team captain Duncan Streeten made the All-Conference Second Team. Streeten has been a scoring threat for the Bearcats, compiling…
  • All 9 seniors anchor ‘Cats in crunch time

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
All season long, the Binghamton University men’s lacrosse team has been plagued by close losses. The Bearcats compiled a 3-11 overall standing, and failure to step up at the end of matches has hurt the Bearcats’ chances of achieving a better record. On March 4, Binghamton took a 6-2 lead into the half at home against Villanova before a second-half collapse in which the Bearcats failed to score. Villanova rallied to tie the match by the end of regulation, then won the opening faceoff of overtime and ended the game on the first and only shot of the overtime period.…
  • Men’s lax get tourney spot

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic With their college lacrosse careers on the line, the Bearcats’ seniors took center stage to extend their season by at least one more game. The Binghamton men’s lacrosse team (3-11, 2-3 America East) clinched their sixth consecutive AE tournament berth on Saturday with an 11-9 win over Hartford (2-11, 1-4). Senior attack Jake Boyce and junior midfielder Steve Carlson each netted a hat trick. Boyce’s eighth three-goal effort of his career moved him into second place all-time in goals scored for the Bearcats with 61. Boyce wasn’t the only senior that stepped up. Midfielders Jonny Baron and Kevin Joy scored…
  • One last chance: Bearcats play for postseason spot

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic BINGHAMTON ATTACK Junior Andy Cook leads the attack with 15 goals and 10 assists, and sophomore Brian Donahue, who had just one point last year, has 12 goals and five assists. Overall, the Bearcats have scored a team total of 86 goals, a far cry from their season total of 64 goals last year. Binghamton has seen more opportunities to score with 53 more total shots and a higher percentage of faceoff wins than last year. Despite this improved production, the Bearcats have mustered only four goals in four different losses and have scored double-digit goals just once this season.…
  • A look ahead at the NFL draft

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
    1. Detroit Lions — Matthew Stafford — QB — Georgia I don’t see any way that the Lions would get away with picking anyone else. Sure, a good offensive lineman such as Jason Smith will give you a sturdy player to build around, but after a 0-16 season, you need a face for your franchise that can help turn it around. Stafford is the guy. 2. St. Louis Rams — Jason Smith — OT — Baylor The Rams need Smith to fill the gap that former Pro Bowl lineman Orlando Pace left when the team released him. While this team…
  • Men’s lax loses to SBU, needs win to advance

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic The Binghamton University men’s lacrosse team is faced with a seemingly simple scenario: Win and get in. The America East tournament field came into focus on Saturday after Binghamton’s 14-9 loss to conference foe Stony Brook. The top four teams out of the six in the conference make the tournament and get a chance to play in the NCAA championship. With Saturday’s win, Stony Brook joined UMBC and Albany in the tournament, as all three teams now have 3-1 conference records. Binghamton, Vermont and Hartford all have 1-3 records and only one last playoff spot remains. The Bearcats will square…
  • From the hardwood to the pavement

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
The untrained eye would never notice differences between playing team basketball and playing pick-up basketball. But I notice, and the differences are rather compelling. I played on a high school basketball team for four years, and before that I played in other organized leagues like so many other kids do. But there is an interesting type of rebirth that occurs when a basketball player makes the transition from the hardwood to the pavement. Not many high school basketball players have the privilege of playing for a college team. The Binghamton University men’s basketball team began its season with 16 members…
  • Men’s lax beats Vermont in conference showdown

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic After disappointing losses over spring break, the Bearcats men’s lacrosse team found enormous hope in a single victory that may have kept their postseason hopes alive. When the Bearcats came home to face conference foe Vermont on Saturday, it was a must-win, and Binghamton came through. Vermont opened up the scoring with a goal, but it would be their only lead of the entire game. Just one minute later, Binghamton struck back with a goal by senior attack Jake Boyce, one of his two first-quarter goals in a span of two minutes. “That was a huge win at home,” Bearcats…
  • Highly touted player gives his word to play for Bing

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
According to the Northstar Basketball blog, citing an unnamed source close to the situation, the Binghamton Bearcats men’s basketball team has received a commitment from freshman shooting guard Tyree Graham to play for the 2010 season. The 6-foot-2-inch, 190-pound Graham has spent time with a handful of teams in the past few years. Most notably, he spent the first two months of this past season with Texas Tech, a prominent Division I program in the Big 12 conference. He appeared in thirteen games for the Red Raiders before leaving the school to attend Harcum Community College in Pennsylvania in order…
  • Tough loss to Danes for men’s lax

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic As the sun set over the Bearcats Sports Complex on a crystal clear Saturday evening, so did the chances of the Binghamton men’s lacrosse team winning its first conference matchup of the season, as they fell to the No. 20 Albany Great Danes by a score of 9-7. With the loss, the Bearcats fell to 1-7 on the season. Senior midfielder Jonny Baron and sophomore attack Brian Donahue scored two goals apiece for the Bearcats. Donahue also added an assist. Junior Andy Cook scored a goal and added two assists, while senior midfielder Duncan Streeten had a goal and an…
  • Upcoming games pivotal for ‘Cats

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic Seven games down. Seven to go. After a 1-6 start, the Binghamton University men’s lacrosse team is hoping that the best is yet to come. With five crucial conference games on the horizon for the Bearcats, the season thus far hasn’t been exactly what the team anticipated it would be. The Bearcats dropped their first four games of the season before earning their first win against Marist, but they have since lost two consecutive games, the first of which was to the Bellarmine Knights by a score of 9-7. “I don’t think we took care of the ball very well,”…
  • Men’s lacrosse falls short against Orange

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic If two’s company, three’s a crowd, so the Binghamton University men’s lacrosse team will look to avoid their third-straight loss when they play the University at Albany this Saturday. The Bearcats fell to 1-6 on the season after two losses last week. On Wednesday afternoon, the Bearcats fell to the Bellarmine University Knights, 9-7. Meanwhile, on Saturday, Binghamton dropped a 13-4 decision to No. 2 Syracuse. The Bearcats fell short against Bellarmine despite keeping the score close. Sophomore midfielder Frank Donlon scored two goals, a career high, while junior midfielder Steve Carlson also netted two goals. Junior attack Andy Cook,…
  • Losing streak ends as men’s lax defeats Marist

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic After opening the season with four consecutive losses, the Binghamton University men’s lacrosse team used a patient, explosive offensive attack and effective defensive pressure to defeat Marist on Saturday afternoon by a score of 12-7 to win its first game of the 2009 season. Junior attack Andy Cook scored two goals, handed out four assists and scooped up two ground balls in the contest. The six points were a career high, and the four assists matched his total from the entire 2008 season. Cook’s assists came from all sorts of offensive opportunities. He received a pass on a breakaway and…
  • After four matches, men’s lacrosse still winless

    By Ryan Ganzenmuller
pic Four games into the season, the Bearcats are still in search of their first win of the season. In the past two weeks, Binghamton University’s men’s lacrosse team lost at home to the Hobart Statesmen by a score of 8-4, traveled to Drexel and lost 11-4, and then returned home to lose an overtime heartbreaker to the Villanova Wildcats by a score of 7-6. On Feb. 24, Hobart used a strong first half on offense to stifle the Bearcats early in the game. Hobart had a 6-0 lead before the Bearcats got on the board in the third period. Binghamton…
