  • Despite warnings, admins efforts too little, too late

    By Cyril Cheriyan
What a season it has been for the basketball squad. The words catastrophic, cataclysmic or any other with the prefix cata- just cannot adequately describe the events that have unfolded over the last two years. I wanted to wait until the Bearcats season was over before divulging any of my thoughts on this matter, because every couple of weeks, new information would come in completely changing the story. When The New York Times sportswriter Pete Thamel berated the school last year for gambling the academic integrity of the school for its basketball squad, the students, including myself, stood by the…
  • Men’s basketball pulled from tourney

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The Binghamton University men’s basketball team was slapped with another setback Monday night, with news that the Bearcats will not participate in the America East tournament. In the form of a statement released to reporters around 8 p.m., Binghamton University President Lois DeFleur announced the defending champions’ withdrawal from this weekend’s competition. DeFleur said in her statement that the decision came “after numerous discussions and considerations of the possible distractions that may occur this weekend.” The tournament is scheduled for Thursday through Sunday at the University of Hartford, in conjunction with the women’s basketball tournament. The Bearcats finished in fifth…
  • Audit cites debit card fraud, drug charges

    By Cyril Cheriyan
On the court, the Binghamton University men’s basketball players were America East All-Stars. They topped the stats, wowed crowds and made BU history. Behind the scenes, it was a whole different story. According to a report compiled for the SUNY board of trustees by a team of lawyers led by Judge Judith Kaye, players were cited as being charged with everything from drug possession to credit card fraud. These, along with academic issues, and the final breaking point — the arrest of one player charged with possession of crack cocaine — culminated in the dismissals of five players in September.…
  • Cyril’s Super Bowl Pick

    By Cyril Cheriyan
Saints: 35-31. Call me a man of the underdog, but the Saints are my favorite to win the Super Bowl. Not only would this game lift the Saints, but it would be great for Louisiana as a whole, considering everything they have been through the last few years. When you compare Drew Brees and Peyton Manning, I’ll admit Manning is on another level. Still, on a good day, Brees is spectacular and with a great group of wide receivers, they can easily move the ball down the field. The key for the Saints is to not let the Colts’ defense…
  • Students look to revamp BU Zoo

    By Cyril Cheriyan
A menagerie is growing at the Events Center, one that promises to fill the basketball stadium with roars, whistles and rumbling. Brace yourselves, folks; the BU Zoo is back in action. What started as a few students chanting in the stands during basketball games grew into an official student fan club. The BU Zoo has its very own section in the Events Center. Its aim? To cheer on the Bearcats while irritating their rivals. The Zoo, according to the official Bearcats Web site, is “the ultimate home court advantage in the Events Center” and it has been praised by coaches…
  • Men’s hoops clips UMBC; Talley tallies 22 points

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic On Wednesday the Bearcats managed to accomplish what last year’s squad couldn’t: a win over UMBC in Maryland. Predicted to finish last in the America East Conference, the fifth-place Bearcats (9-13, 4-3 AE) coasted past the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (1-20, 0-8 AE) on Wednesday, 80-63, and secured their fourth conference win of the season. The Bearcats saw a tight first half as they missed eight of 11 shots, including all five shots from beyond the arc. UMBC took control of the game in the first five minutes and eventually led the Bearcats 11-6 with 14:36 left to go.…

pic Dec. 20, 2009: @ Marist | W 70-52 High Point: Leading Marist 54-47 with 5:37 on the clock, Bearcats close out game with 16-5 run. Low Point: Marist’s Dave Kaba banks 3-pointer with 15:57 left in the first half to give Red Foxes a 7-2 lead over the Bearcats — their largest of the game. Bearcat of the Game: Greer Wright The junior forward hits a season-high 22 points with two steals and three blocks. Wright reaches double figures for the ninth time this season. In their words: “We shot the ball decently and played solid defense. We still have…
  • In basketball fiasco, admins are at fault

    By Cyril Cheriyan
Another semester has come and gone, and overall I guess you could say that it wasn’t bad at all. We had two conference championship teams and a few accolades from star players. It is amazing to see how the Bearcats came fifth in the nation for GPA among Division I soccer teams and how the basketball team rose from the ashes of the problems it has encountered this year and is playing better than anyone would have thought. Overall, as far the athletes are concerned, they really held up the Binghamton name. The administration and the athletic department, however, are…
  • Cyril’s NFL Picks: Week 12

    By Cyril Cheriyan
LOCK: Philadelphia (-5.5) over ATLANTA: With the Falcons’ Chris Redman making his fifth start in the last seven years, who do you think will clinch this game? Doesn’t take a brain surgeon to see who will be champ. CHICAGO (-9.0) over St. Louis: Chi-Town will finally get the chance to run the ball in this one because the Rams suck. Baltimore (+3.0) over GREEN BAY: With Al Harris out, the Ravens will have a better chance at taking this game, and how can you doubt Joe Flacco to come through? New England (-5.5) over MIAMI: If it weren’t for Dan,…

    By Cyril Cheriyan
LOCK: GIANTS (-6.5) over Atlanta: The G-men defense will own Matt Ryan. ‘Nuff said. INDIANAPOLIS (-1.0) over Baltimore: Peyton and Colts have to be control the game offensively, which means running the football. If they can do this they’ll be able to put this game in the bag. The key here is putting it into the end zone. San Diego (PK) over DENVER: Denver will play the same game regardless of who their QB will be, which in my opinion is dangerous. SD will have to have a good passing attack to win this. CHICAGO (+3.0) over Philadelphia: With Westbrook…
  • Alvin speaks out; questions admins

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic As the crowd made its way out of the Events Center the night that the Binghamton University men’s basketball team defeated Holy Family for its first win, one young man made his way toward the sidelines instead. He was someone who had made visits to the Bearcat dance floor all too often last year. All that remained of his journey was a banner hung above the students’ section: “America East Champions 2008-09.” But Malik Alvin was not just fondly reminiscing; he was wishing he could still be a part of it. “It’s disappointing that I’m not out there playing,” he…
  • Men’s basketball opens season with 54-49 win

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic The way the game went in the first few minutes, it looked as if the Bearcats’ opponent might walk away with a victory. But the Binghamton University men’s basketball team overcame the early deficit to defeat Bloomsburg in its season opener on Saturday, 54-49. The Bearcats started off the first four minutes and 11 seconds allowing six turnovers and four baskets inside the arc. The score stood 8-0 in favor of the Huskies before a media timeout was called. “I was shocked how we came out and played in the first 10 minutes,” said Bearcats head coach Mark Macon. “Man,…

LOCK: Denver (-3.5) over WASHINGTON: The Broncos will make good use of the Redskins’ shoddy offensive line, which will put this game in their hands. NEW YORK JETS (-7.0) over Jacksonville: New York has to do two things: Stop Maurice Jones-Drew. Stop Mike Sims-Walker. If they can place a block on these two hyphenated dudes, then the Jets can easily win this. New Orleans (-13.5) over ST. LOUIS: Seriously, do I have to explain myself?! Expect the Saints to take down the Rams’ defense. INDIANAPOLIS (-3.0) over New England: Indianapolis has a lot going for it in this game: an…
  • Bearcats aquatics drop meets to Minutemen, look ahead to showdown with Drexel Dragons

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic Men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams found themselves caught in a wave as they lost to host UMass. The men’s team fell 182-117 while the women dropped the meet 171-107. The Bearcats kicked off the match in full force, winning the women’s 200-meter medley relay. Juniors Brittany Detlef, Amanda Ciccone, Lyndsi Worthington and Allyce Brand finished with a time of 1:50.54. The time was just six-hundredths of a second ahead of rival UMass. Ciccone’s hot win streak continued with a first place finish in the 200-meter freestyle (1:54.48), 50 free (24.12) and 100 free (52.46) while freshman Melissa Lindahl…
  • New faces, same game for men’s basketball

    By Cyril Cheriyan
A month ago when the throne of the former America East men’s basketball champions began to crumble and then collapse in a matter of days, there was little idea as to where the Bearcats program would go. Now in the wake of the storm, both new and old faces emerge to take the reigns of the Binghamton University basketball program, including a new coach and six walk-ons. Leading the pack is Mark Macon, who after former coach Kevin Broadus’ indefinite suspension, took the role as interim head coach. “Every day is going to be a battle toward success for this…
  • Cyril’s NFL picks: Week 9

    By Cyril Cheriyan
LOCK: SAN FRANCISCO (-4.0) over Tennessee: The 49ers just need to use that same defensive strategy they used on the Colts last week in this game and they just cant go wrong. Also, counting on the fact that the Titans are just pitiful this season, SF has this on lock and so do I. NEW ENGLAND (-10.5) over Miami: If Belichick and the Pats try and attack the Dolphins cornerbacks in this game, they can easily pass this spread. Plus, New England’s passing rate is ranked second so you know they have the power right there to make things happen.…
  • Men’s soccer falls in final road match to Hartwick

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic Pouring rain, bitter cold and a dash of snow — the weather seemed to speak for the Bearcats’ outcome. The Binghamton University men’s soccer team ended its regular season on a low note as it lost a match to Hartwick College 2-1 on Tuesday. “I thought it was one of those non-conference matches well in the year that didn’t have a lot of spirit,” Marco said. “You could say that it could have gotten us prepared for the conference championships, but at this point in the season, its relevance is not in perspective.” Hartwick’s winning point came late in the…
  • Women’s swim team defeats Catamounts, falls to Boston

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic The Binghamton swimming and diving team got a bittersweet taste of America East play Saturday as the women’s team defeated Vermont, 124-118, but lost to Boston University, 138-99. Meanwhile the men’s squad also lost to the Terriers, 135-106. “It was a nice surprise for the women,” said head coach Sean Clark. “I think it was a real confidence-booster and nice reward for all the work they have put in.” The Bearcats took an early lead as junior Amanda Ciccone placed first place in the 100-meter freestyle (52.92 seconds) and second place in the 50 free, but it was not just…

LOCK: Green Bay (-9.0) over CLEVELAND: For all you Browns haters who thought Cleveland couldn’t catch anything, you’re all wrong. They be catchin’ colds. Forget detrimental injuries, five losses and the flu fiasco; the Packers would be walking all over Browns even if they were in pristine condition. Minnesota (+4.5) over PITTSBURGH: This one is a gamble, but I think that the Steelers will be giving all their focus on Peterson, which will lead Favre to make some good passes. New York Jets (-6.0) over OAKLAND: I’m hopin’ that Buffalo game will be the last time I have to worry…
  • Road struggles continue for men’s soccer

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic The opportunity for a top-two finish in the America East Conference turned to dust for the Binghamton University men’s soccer team as the Bearcats dropped a match to the University of Hartford, 2-1. The loss places the Bearcats at fifth in the conference and brings their road record to 1-4 for the season. “I thought our guys played very well given the long drive we had [to Hartford],” said head coach Paul Marco. “We came out fighting in the beginning, but as the match went on we lost a little bit of the fight and bite that we had.” The…

LOCK: NEW YORK JETS (-9.5) over Buffalo The Jets will WIPE THE FLOOR with the Bills. I’m just doing this to spite Ryan. ‘Nuff said. New York Giants (+3.0) over NEW ORLEANS: This is a gamble: an away game and a sick opposing offense. Still, I think if the Giants can match the Saints with a good running game, Big Blue will overtake them. PITTSBURGH (-14.0) over Cleveland: Because the Browns will never ever learn to protect the ball, the Steelers will have their way with them. Cleveland really needs to step up because the team really blows on all…
  • Bearcats gear up to play Boston at home

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic The Binghamton University men’s soccer team plans to go head-to-head with arguably the most formidable of America East Conference opponents tonight. Preseason favorite Boston University heads up to the rolling hills of Vestal to take on the Bearcats in what head coach Paul Marco says will be the most exciting of games. “I think they are a fantastic team,” he said. “They have had a fantastic non-conference run and we won’t underestimate them.” Boston University has indeed had an impressive non-conference year. The Terriers shut out then-nationally No. 1-ranked St. John’s University, 1-0, No. 13 University of Connecticut 3-0 and…

  • Broadus’s folly costs Bing more headache

    By Cyril Cheriyan
You would think that any sane person charged with the responsibility of picking up the debris of what used to be the Binghamton University basketball team would keep a low profile and make the effort to stay out of the media headlines, especially when the team has become the Lindsay Lohan of the NCAA. I’m still hoping that head coach Kevin Broadus has not gone insane. Just when nobody thought that this debacle could get any worse, Broadus violates NCAA recruiting rules, adding to the cluster of drug charges, dismissals and resignations. I know that he wants to clean up…
  • Men’s soccer 7-1-1 all time against Seawolves

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The Binghamton University men’s soccer team looks to see if it can remain undefeated in America East Conference play as the Bearcats travel to Stony Brook. Binghamton has compiled a 6-4-1 overall record, winning four of its last six matches after a 2-1 overtime win over Albany on Wednesday. Last year the team defeated SBU 1-0 in regular season play, and the Bearcats have a 7-1-1 all-time record against Stony Brook. The Bearcats are scheduled to face a team that has been having a rough season thus far. The Seawolves have a 1-9-2 overall record which includes a winless conference…

pic The aquamen and women of Binghamton University take to the lanes for their first meet of the season on Saturday. After the men landed in third place and the women achieved sixth place in the America East Conference last season, the Bearcats come back hoping to stir up the waters. “The upperclassmen realize they are not going to just be given their places,” said head coach Sean Clark in a Binghamton University press release. “They have to earn it every day; the freshmen want to prove they belong. There is a lot of competition in the pool, most of it’s…

The Binghamton University men’s soccer team plans to put the “Great” in the Great Danes to the test as the Bearcats look to kick off their conference season tomorrow as they host Albany at the Bearcats Sports Complex. Head coach Paul Marco said that the America East Conference games this season are going to be unlike anything anyone has seen. “I’ve said it all along,” he said. “Our conference is fantastic. The conference will be different from the nonconference schedule. The teams are more prepared for each other. The teams are a little bit tighter, more compact, less space [and]…

    By Cyril Cheriyan
LOCK: Giants (-8.5) over KANSAS CITY: C’mon, do I have to explain myself for this one? If the Giants don’t get this, I’m moving to Jersey. Kansas City has a better chance of making it to the MLB playoffs than ever matching up to Big Blue. HOUSTON (-9.0) over Oakland: The team’s strength is the passing game. As long as Houston doesn’t screw that up, this game is in the bag. Denver (+3.0) over DALLAS The Cowboys’ rushing offense is looking good, but I think Kyle Orton can manage to outplay their defense. Cincinnati (-5.5) over CLEVELAND The Browns have…
  • Tough measures taken to restore hoops program

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The dismantling of Binghamton University’s men’s basketball team last week took away six players: four who helped bring the Bearcats to the NCAA tournament, and two transfers. For head coach Kevin Broadus, the challenge now is how to take up where the team left off. In less than a week, the basketball program came crumbling down after second-leading scorer junior Emanuel “Tiki” Mayben was arrested and charged with felony counts of selling and possessing cocaine. A day after Mayben’s arraignment and dismissal from the team, five other players from the basketball team, including top scorers D.J. Rivera and Malik Alvin,…
  • Bearcats fiasco draws media whirlwind

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The Binghamton University men’s basketball team has become a household name — at least in the media world. It’s not for winning its first America East Conference tournament and it’s not for its first NCAA appearance, but for the recent fiasco in the dismissal of six key players. The resignation of Joel Thirer from his post as athletic director followed shortly. From ESPN to The Huffington Post, the program has caught the attention of reporters and bloggers alike. Much like the coverage of the arrest of Malik Alvin last year after he allegedly stole condoms from Wal-Mart, the media has…
  • I still bleed green and white

    By Cyril Cheriyan
If there is still a Binghamton basketball fan out there, can I get a “hell yeah!” Please? The recent fiasco revolving around the Bearcats has perplexed me. O.K., maybe a little bit more than that. Given Emanuel “Tiki” Mayben’s arrest, the removal of star players like D.J. Rivera and Malik Alvin, the disappointment of not seeing the performances of former Rutgers star Corey Chandler or former Michigan player Paul Crosby and the departure of Thirer, it has been quite the depressing week. Still, a fan should remain loyal through the thick and thin of all things. There was a time…
  • Emanuel ‘Tiki’ Mayben’s arrest follows 3-month investigation

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic Emanuel “Tiki” Mayben was permanently dismissed from Binghamton University’s men’s basketball team after pleading not guilty to drugs charges Thursday morning. Mayben, who was one of the Bearcats’ leading scorers, was arrested in his hometown of Troy Wednesday night. He was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, two counts of criminal sale of a controlled substance and fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, all felonies. According to Troy Police Sgt. Terry Buchanan, Mayben was indicted for allegedly selling cocaine twice June 29. When he was arrested Wednesday, police allegedly found 3.4 grams of cocaine on the…

Binghamton University basketball player Emanuel “Tiki” Mayben was arrested and charged with third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, a felony, in his hometown of Troy Wednesday night. Troy police said Mayben was indicted for sales in drug paraphernalia, according to a report from CBS 6 WRGB. The arrest came after a three-month investigation by the Troy Police Special Operations Section. When he was arrested on King Street between Jacob and Federal Streets at 8 p.m., the senior allegedly had 3.4 grams of an off-white powder, which field-tested positive for cocaine, on him, police said. He was subsequently charged with…
  • Bearcats are doing better than expected

    By Cyril Cheriyan
You may call it a rebuilding year for Binghamton University men’s soccer, but in my eyes the team has definitely exceeded expectations. In all the matches that the Bearcats have played this season they have not lost by more than one goal. They have leveled up to high-power teams like UC Davis and won matches against teams they tied last season, like Syracuse University and Colgate University. The Bearcats currently hold fourth place in the America East Conference in non-conference standings. That is definitely something significant when you have only four seniors this season. Just six games in, some of…

There the Bearcats plan to face off against Gonzaga University and University of California at Davis. “These games will not be any different,” said Binghamton men’s soccer head coach Paul Marco. “It’s just another match that we are focusing on. These are some good teams.” The Bearcats’ first test in the Southwest starts on Friday against Gonzaga. This season, the Bulldogs come in to face Binghamton with a 3-1-2 record,…

LOCK: Pittsburgh (-3.0) over CHICAGO Cutler and that four-interception game last week was pitiful. I’ve got my money on the Steelers. KANSAS CITY (-3.0) over Oakland Don’t get me wrong, both teams totally suck, but if the Chiefs have a better running game, and I think they will, KC will come out dominant. ATLANTA (-6.5) over Carolina With Delhomme in the struggle and turnovers by the Panthers that we saw last week, Atlanta can definitely muster this win. JETS (+4.0) over New England I was tempted to put this as my lock. If the Jets can get their rushing game…

  • BU men’s soccer hits ‘road’ bump

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic The Binghamton University men’s soccer team got its first licks of the season on the road this weekend and boy, did it taste bitter. The Bearcats dropped a pair of matches over the weekend at the Lafayette Tournament, losing to Villanova, 2-1, and Lafayette, 1-0. The losses were the first two of the season for the Bearcats. “We played two very good teams,” said head coach Paul Marco. “Lafayette was nationally receiving votes [and] Villanova is a good Big East team. I think both games could have gone either way. That’s how close the games were. We had moments where…

pic It was 1:20 into overtime. The ball from Bearcats junior Josh Sailar sailed to the goalpost, but it ricocheted off the crossbar as the cheers from crowd at the Bearcats Sports Complex fell with disappointment. The rebound, however, fell at the feet of junior Kyle Manscuk, who was stationed right in front of the goal. The rest was history. “Sometimes a team goes out to put in a point, and other times it goes out to win the game,” said Bearcats men’s soccer head coach Paul Marco. “I would say we went out to do both.” The Binghamton University men’s…

It was the Orange’s first non-conference loss since 2005, when they fell to SUNY College at Oneonta. “I am speechless,” said senior Kyle Kucharski. “I am just…

In their training, they were taught to be both the athlete and the student and were challenged physically and mentally to be the best. Now the men’s soccer squad is locked and loaded for what hopes to be another phenomenal season. “We have a world-class standard,” Marco said. “The goal here is to have these guys meet it and have them take it…

  • Rivera files for draft; Broadus supportive

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic Usually when the NBA releases its annual list of early entry candidates for the upcoming NBA draft, it’s not a big deal for Binghamton University. That is, until this year. Thursday’s release of NBA potentials had a bit of southern-tier green and white in it as Bearcats forward D.J. Rivera declared himself an eligible candidate for the NBA draft. He is one of 103 players to file as an early entry applicant. Binghamton basketball head coach Kevin Broadus said that the junior expressed to him that he had interest in a professional career, but said that Rivera was “definitely not…

For the fifth straight season, the Binghamton University women’s lacrosse team failed to win a single America East Conference game as they ended their 2009 season with a loss to the University of New Hampshire, 21-9. “First half I thought we came out to play,” said Bearcats head coach Tony Zostant, according to a Binghamton University press release. “The heat was definitely a factor, but both teams had to play in the heat. We did a good job on draw controls and we played to the end.” In the first seven minutes of the match the teams traded back-to-back goals.…

pic What do you get when you cross a 3-11 record team with its No. 11 nationally-ranked team conference counterpart? There really is no answer. The Binghamton University women’s lacrosse team continued its winless conference season (0-5), falling to Boston University in its largest margin of defeat, 19-5. The Terriers, undefeated in conference play (5-0), secured the top seed in the America East tournament after the win. “We played 27 minutes of straight defense and you can’t win that way,” said Binghamton head coach Tony Zostant according to a Binghamton University press release. “It’s just a consistency thing. The Bearcats defeated conference rival Albany on Saturday, 7-0, securing an undefeated conference season and the third straight sweep for the team. “It was a good win for us,” head coach Mike Stevens said, according a Binghamton University press release. Sophomore Lauren Bates swept the Great Dane’s Susan Ma in first singles, 6-0, 6-0, while Jillian Santos defeated rival Kim Weltman, 6-4, 6-4 in second. The dynamic duo then finished off Ma and Laine…

On Wednesday the Binghamton women’s lacrosse team had its losing streak extended to four matches as it was pillaged by the Colgate Raiders, 13-6. Similar to their previous game against Vermont, the Bearcats came out strong and kept up with the Raiders for much of the first half. So an epic basketball season is over and there is this lull over campus. Walking around campus, I see a few students still rocking the America East champs and March Madness T-shirts. Bearcats claws and photos of men and women painted in green and white are posted in the dorms of Mountainview College and Hillside Community. People still have their Facebook statuses set as “WE ARE GOING DANCING” or “Numero Uno.” It seems as if we are still trying to hold onto those good moments, which of course is not a bad thing. pic A quick start ended in an eventual fallout for the the Binghamton University women’s lacrosse team Saturday as the Bearcats lost their first America East conference game of the season to the University of Vermont, 13-9. The Bearcats took the lead 21 seconds into the match as sophomore Lisa Illig netted the first goal on an assist from sophomore Ali Castiglie. The Catamounts answered back, however, with a goal of their own 25 seconds later. For much of the game, the Bearcats stayed neck-and-neck with Vermont, with both teams exchanging goals and falling behind by no more than one point.…

.529 Binghamton outshot the Blue Devils .529 to .491, but the Bearcats lost the game. 1 The Bearcats only put in one of five free throws in the game. Compare that to the Blue Devils’ 21 of 25. 20 Although Duke won, it was D.J. Rivera who had the game-high of 20 points. 21 The team committed a total of 21 fouls against Duke. Duke also had a total of 21 assists. 6 Duke had six players record double-digit point totals.
  • Fans grateful for epic season

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic The Binghamton University men’s basketball team’s first-ever NCAA championship appearance aired in Lecture Hall 1 yesterday. Scores of students wearing green and white settled into the small black seats to watch the Bearcats battle Duke on CBS. Although the fans were disappointed that Binghamton had lost, many of them enjoyed the excitement while it lasted. Bearcats fans stood up and clapped as freshman Matt Mullins banked the last shot in the final five seconds of the game. They then exited Lecture Hall a little less noisy than when they came in. “I did not expect anything like this whatsoever [from…
  • Binghamton to meet Duke in first NCAA berth

    By Cyril Cheriyan
When the icon of the green bearcat appeared alongside the face of a horned blue face on CBS’s “Selection Sunday,” Tiki Mayben clutched David Fine’s shoulder to stop himself from laughing and stomping his feet while the dark Events Center erupted with raucous cheers and whistles. The Bearcats are heading to Greensboro, N.C., to play none other than powerhouse Duke University. “I went to church this morning, and this is not what I prayed for,” said Binghamton head coach Kevin Broadus. “Well, when you’ve got to play someone, why not the best?” The Broadus squad is seeded No. 15 in…
  • Bloggers predict major upset

    By Cyril Cheriyan
Although Binghamton University alumnus Tony Kornheiser may have put down the Blue Devils to move on to the next round, many bloggers and journalists from sea to shining sea are predicting an upset of Duke by the Bearcats on Thursday. On a forum from Dukebasketballreport.com, many posters commented on how Binghamton University may have a good chance, considering the colleges from where the players came. They alluded to the Duke-Belmont game last championship in which No. 2 Duke just squeezed past No. 15 Belmont by a score of 71-70. Twitter has been an application through which many bloggers have predicted…

  • Kevin Broadus: Coach of the Year

    By Cyril Cheriyan
Kevin Broadus’ work to bring a new line of athletes together to win the America East regular season title was highlighted at Friday’s AE men’s basketball awards dinner as the captain of the Bearcats’ ship received the 2008-09 America East Coach of the Year award. Broadus was recognized for leading the Bearcats to its most successful season in 63 years with the regular season title and winning 13 of 16 conference games. Picked by America East coaches to finish fifth in the preseason poll, the Bearcats exceeded expectations and clinched the No. 1 seed in the conference with a school-record…

pic Binghamton University women’s lacrosse stormed Temple on Friday, notching its first win of the season, 16-11. Head coach Tony Zostant was pleased with the victory over the Atlantic 10 champions. “It was a great performance by our team; I’m very pleased at both ends of the field. We were very poised,” Zostant said, according a Binghamton University press release. “It’s a great win for our program. I can’t say enough about our defense and how we played.” The Bearcats started off strong with a 3-1 lead against Temple with 12:20 remaining in the first half. Sophomore Lisa Illig got things…

pic They said it would never happen. The Binghamton University men’s basketball team (20-8, 13-3 AE) would come into the 2008-09 season without its top three scorers from last season and was favored to finish fifth in the conference. At a preseason media day, when asked who would be starting in the new lineup, head coach Kevin Broadus had said “You tell me who should start, because I don’t know yet. I’m going to let [the players] figure it out in practice.” And yet here they are, the No. 1 seed in the America East after clinching a share of the…
  • AE Special: Editor’s Note

    By Cyril Cheriyan
Well ladies and gents, the day has finally arrived. The America East Championship is here and things could not be looking any better for this Division I conference. I would say that this season has been unlike any we have ever seen before. It is a Renaissance, a rebirth of the America East basketball program. So much progress has been made this year for many of the programs. We’ve had three teams — Binghamton, Vermont and Boston — who have been going head-to-head all season long for the chance to clinch the No. 1 spot in the conference. We have…
  • Mixed response to N.Y. Times article

    By Cyril Cheriyan
On the front page of its Sunday Sports section, The New York Times featured a picture of Binghamton University men’s basketball players D.J. Rivera and Malik Alvin suited up and sitting elbow-to-knee on the sideline. To the chagrin of some in Binghamton University’s athletic department, however, the accompanying article was not about Rivera’s standing among the nation’s top 25 scorers or about the Bearcats’ ability to win while Alvin, a key player, battled injury. This season, Binghamton’s Division I team has won 19 of 27 games, including a 12-3 record in the America East Conference, in which they are tied…
  • Men’s lacrosse to open season Saturday at BSC

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic On Saturday, the Bearcats Sports Complex will once again come to life, but not with soccer balls and cleats. Instead the field will be littered with stick-carrying, ball-chasing Bearcats in shoulder pads and helmets. It’s lacrosse season, baby. Under the guidance of Towson University’s former All-American defender, head coach Ed Stephenson, the Bearcats have one clear idea in mind this season: to clinch the America East title. Predicted to finish No. 4 in the America East Conference in the preseason poll, the players say that they are confident they can go further than that. Stephenson is ecstatic about how the…
  • Women’s lacrosse starts new season

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The Binghamton University women’s lacrosse team kicks off its season today with some Midwestern flavor. The Bearcats will head to Duquesne University to face the University of Denver. The team struggled in the 2008 season, coming in last in the America East, finishing 5-11 overall and 0-6 in the conference. To make matters worse, the Bearcats were predicted to come out in the last AE preseason poll. The Bearcats did however finish 2008 No. 1 in the conference in saves/game (9.69) and No. 4 in groundballs/game. This year BU head coach Tony Zostant and Co. will hope to reverse the…

So another Binghamton University basketball player kicks the basket, and I hear people around me saying things like: “Oh my God, I can’t believe it, not again!” and “What the hell is up with these players?” or “I wonder what one of these guys did THIS time.” So you want to know how I feel? Well, you see, the thing is, I’m actually real glad. At this point, if members of the team just don’t get it, then it’s better that they leave. No one has to be a rocket scientist to realize that this is the most exciting year…
  • Highly touted player leaves Bearcats

    By Cyril Cheriyan
While the Binghamton University men’s basketball team is tied in second place with the University of Vermont in the America East standings, the numbers on its roster continue to drop. Theo Davis, a sophomore transfer from Gonzaga University, has hung up his green and white jersey. The reason? “He simply doesn’t want to play basketball anymore,” said Bearcats Associate Director of Athletics for Communications John Hartrick. Bearcats head coach Kevin Broadus said he is not trying to think about it now. He needs to focus on what lies on the road for his team. “I don’t think there is really…

    1) Boston University (14-9, 9-2 AE): The Terriers are running high on an eight-game win streak. Their most recent victory was on Saturday against New Hampshire, 67-49. Freshman Jake O’Brien was named as the America East Rookie of the Week for the second time this season. 2) Vermont (18-7, 9-3): The Catamounts defeated Hartford yesterday, 71-63. Vermont also beat Albany, 79-70, on Saturday, marking its first win against the Great Danes in two years. 3) Binghamton (16-8, 9-3): The Bearcats overcame the Great Danes yesterday, 88-75. Binghamton also overtook Stony Brook in an overtime thriller Saturday, 63-61. Junior Emanuel Mayben…

The Binghamton University women’s tennis team proved that its artillery was a force to be reckoned with as the Bearcats held Seton Hall and Army at bay over the weekend. The Bearcats notched a 6-1 win over Seton Hall on Saturday. Bearcat freshman Jillian Santos came away with a win at first singles over Pirates’ Elizabeth Verow, 6-4, 6-4, and later joined forces with sophomore Yulia Smirnova to defeat Verow and Denise Liebschner, 8-2, at first doubles. Bearcat sophomore Lauren Bates defeated Liebschner in second singles, 6-3, 6-2, but lost in a team-up with junior Danyelle Shapiro at third doubles,…

Every so often, Pipe Dream Sports pulls out the big guns, the Golden Pipe, the most prestigious award the staff can give out. This week, two athletes were so exceptional, we figured it was time to pull it out again. Emanuel “Tiki” Mayben, men’s basketball: After pouring in a career high of 31 points in the pivotal game against Vermont on Wednesday, Mayben was named one of the America East Players of the Game. He scored 14 of his points in the last 6:17 of the game to help the win. The junior also pulled a game high of seven…

Jessica Mendoza, an American softball player and two-time Olympian, arrived at the University to speak at the fourth annual Lourdes Celebrating Women’s Athletics Luncheon. The luncheon featured fans, community leaders and campus supporters alike who came together to help raise money in recognition of female student athletes and raise awareness of the advantages of women taking up collegiate competition. Each February, the luncheon is held as part of National…
  • Men’s tennis sweeps singles, loses doubles

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic Villanova is notorious for its spectacular men’s basketball team. As for notoriety of the school’s men’s tennis team? Well, the Bearcats squashed that notion. The Binghamton men’s tennis team defeated the Wildcats, 6-1, Saturday, sweeping the singles matches in straight sets. The Bearcats, however, went 1-3 in doubles matches. “I expected us to play better in singles than doubles,” said head coach Adam Cohen. “We played two new doubles teams, so I kind of knew it would be difficult.” The singles matches highlighted junior Moshe Levy, who placed a 7-6, 6-4 win at first singles, and freshman Gilbert Wong, who…
  • BU tennis splits matches

    By Cyril Cheriyan
As the spring season kicks off for Binghamton University women’s tennis, it’s all about preparing for the America East tournament. And preparation seems to be well underway. The Bearcats started their season splitting a pair of matches on Jan. 25. The tournament, which featured three teams, took place at Syracuse, where the Bearcats defeated Niagara, 6-1, and lost to Syracuse University, 1-6. “We lost to a very strong Syracuse team,” said Binghamton head coach Mike Stevens. “The tournament, however, went very well. We had several players that played spectacularly.” Freshman Jillian Santos shined through, winning both of her singles matches.…

Last year I was the laughingstock of friends and foes alike because of my undying belief that the Giants were going to win the Super Bowl. To those friends and foes I say, “HA!” This year, once again, I root for the underdog. The Cardinals really do have what it takes to clinch the Lombardi Trophy. Like every great team is supposed to be able to, they can pull through in the most desperate and exciting times. Sure they were the sixth seed, but then again, this season has been filled with surprises and upsets for everyone. The fall of…
  • Another Bearcat suspended

    By Cyril Cheriyan
Senior guard Dwayne Jackson was suspended from the Binghamton University men’s basketball team indefinitely on Jan. 19, for a violation of team policy. Jackson is the second BU men’s basketball player to be suspended from the team this year, after junior Malik Alvin was arrested after an incident at Wal-Mart in October. “We can’t say anything much right now other than the fact that [Jackson] will not be back anytime soon,” said men’s basketball spokesman John Hartrick. “For privacy matters we can’t divulge it.” Jackson, who has been playing for the Bearcats for four years, was the third leading scorer…

1.) Vermont (14-6, 5-2 AE): The Catamounts are currently on a five-game win streak, their latest victim being New Hampshire. Since Dec. 14 they have won 10 of 13 games and are atop the conference in offensive scoring, assists and 3-point shooting. 2.) Binghamton (12-7, 5-2): The Bearcats are certainly not the team they were last season. Since Dec. 20 they have won 8 of 12 games with a newly assembled team. Junior D.J. Rivera has quickly emerged as the star player and leading scorer in the AE conference with 19.8 points a game. Senior Dwayne Jackson, the third leading…
  • Jaspers come to BU

    By Cyril Cheriyan
Manhattan College (4-3) looks to come up to the rolling hills of Vestal Saturday to play the Binghamton University men’s basketball team (4-3). The last time the two faced off was during the ESPN Bracket Buster Series last season in which Binghamton defeated the Jaspers, 66-56, without two of their starting players, including former Bearcat Lazar Trifunovic. BU head coach Kevin Broadus hopes that this time it will be no different. “[Manhattan] is playing very well this year,” he said. “They are shooting better and just working together in a way a team is supposed to work.” In their last…
  • BU basketball, you have made me a humble man

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The hardest thing about being a critic is admitting when you are wrong. Ladies and gentlemen, on Saturday I was humbled by the Binghamton University men’s basketball team’s victory over Rutgers. Even before the season began, I stated that Coach Kevin Broadus’ new recruits could either spell disaster or phenomenon for the Bearcats. Personally, as the kind of cynic that I am, I thought the outcome of this year would be bad, but you can’t complain about a 4-2 record. Does anyone realize that D.J. Rivera accumulated 23 points in just 26 minutes against the Scarlet Knights? Then there is…
  • Bearcats No. 1 in nation for academic excellence

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic They may not have won the America East Championships, but the Bearcats still managed to school the rest of the 200 Division I soccer teams in the NCAA. Literally. The Binghamton University men’s soccer team came out No. 1 for the 2007-08 academic year after posting a combined GPA of 3.37, according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. “This honor is a testament to all of the hard work our players have put into our program,” said head coach Paul Marco, according to a Binghamton University press release. “They have set a standard of excellence and been successful…
  • Cyril’s NFL Picks: Week 14

    By Cyril Cheriyan
LOCK: GIANTS (-7) over Philadelphia: So what if they don’t have Plaxico Burress? Big Blue is on a seven-game winning streak and they have proved before they can do just fine without him. TENNESSEE (-13.5) over Cleveland: I don’t even have to explain this one. Jets (-3) over SAN FRANCISCO: The Jets’ defense will be key in winning this game. If they can cover both Shaun Hill and Frank Gore, this game is in the bag. Hey, my boys convinced all nonbelievers that they could take down the powerhouse of the NFL. Why should they stop now? GREEN BAY (-5.5)…
  • Cyril’s NFL Picks - Week 12

    By Cyril Cheriyan
LOCK: MIAMI (-1) over New England: The surprise team of the season will definitely have a chance at beating the Patriots. The Pats have no Brady and a dwindling defense. With a rejuvenated Pennington and an overall decent offense, the Dolphins can have this game. Giants (-3) over ARIZONA: Big Blue will be able to trample over the Cardinals with its running game. They have made it happen before with Baltimore, who has a really good defense, so they should be able to make it happen in this game as well. JETS (-6) over Titans: I always root for my…
  • Is new structure sound enough?

    By Cyril Cheriyan
It’s that time of year again, folks. The Events Center is ready to come back to life, and this year could not be any more thrilling. The newly-structured Binghamton University men’s basketball team will have a lot to prove, and as all eyes are on the new transfers, the game this Friday will bring to light if they can all work together. So how are the Bearcats expected to perform this year? Well, you see, the thing is, we honestly have no idea. We are talking about a team made up of several transfers from all over the United States…
  • Cyril’s NFL Picks: Week 11

    By Cyril Cheriyan
Lock: Tennessee (-3) over JACKSONVILLE: The Jaguars have certainly gotten a lot better since last year, but they are not good enough to beat the unbeaten yet. GIANTS (-7) over Ravens: In a game where the best offense in the NFL takes on the best defense in the NFL, I’d pick offense any day. CAROLINA (-14) over Detroit: Detroit is winless. ‘Nuff said. There is nothing surprising the Lions can pull out of their sleeves, especially when taking on the Panthers. INDIANAPOLIS (-8) over Houston: Tony Dungy is the kind of guy who doesn’t get comfortable with the fact that…
  • NFL Picks - Week 10

    By Cyril Cheriyan
LOCK: GIANTS (-3) over Philadelphia: Philly is no match for Plaxico Burress. Period. Since his signing in 2005, there has been no way the team could manage to mull over Big Blue. ‘Nuff said. NEW ENGLAND (NL) over Buffalo: In normal circumstances, the Bills would have had this on lock-down. But with Buffalo’s recent slump, the Pats have a chance to make this happen. Tennessee (-3) over CHICAGO: With the Titans looking to extend their streak to nine and the Bears having an under-the-weather Kyle Orton, it looks like Tennessee has got this game. JETS (-1) over St. Louis: I’ve…
  • Stenta in running for soccer fan favorite

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The best goalie in the America East Conference this season can now have a shot at being its best player. Binghamton University’s junior goalkeeper, Jason Stenta, is one of nine athletes in the run for the 2008 America East Men’s Soccer Fans’ Choice Player of the Year. Fans from all over the East Coast will have the opportunity to go online to Americaeast.com and vote for their favorite athlete. This is the first year the conference has done something like this, and Stenta could not be any happier. “It is a big acknowledgment,” Stenta said. “We’ll see how the votes…
  • Cyril’s NFL Picks: Week 9

    By Cyril Cheriyan
LOCK: GIANTS (-3) over Dallas: The Cowboys don’t have Romo anymore, and with their stellar performance this season, the Giants should have no problem trampling over them. The Giants’ defense is untouchable with players like Mathias Kiwanuka, who has had three sacks, five tackles, five QB hits and a forced fumble. The Cowboys will have a tough time now with an even weaker offense to come out strong. INDIANAPOLIS (-6) over New England: Sure, the Colts have been struggling, but with Manning’s skills and no Brady on the side of the Pats, the odds go clearly in favor of Indianapolis.…
  • Bu Volleyball goes 1-1 over weekend

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The travel along the East Coast had its ups and downs for the Binghamton University volleyball team this weekend. The Bearcats (10-12, 5-1 AE) ended their five-match winning streak after losing to Albany, 0-3, on Friday. On Sunday, Binghamton went down to Maryland to play UMBC and defeated them, 3-1. Albany (13-8, 5-0) had a good hold on Binghamton from the start, its offense penetrating through the Bearcats defense. In the first set, Binghamton had a total of six errors and nine kills, whereas Albany tallied two errors and 17 kills. A .455 hitting percentage gave the Great Danes the…
  • BU’s first major leaguer

    By Cyril Cheriyan
In its short time as a Division I school, Binghamton University has produced a few exemplary athletes who later went on to pursue their dreams as professional performers. Former graduate student Rory Quiller became the America East’s first Division I NCAA champion and is now working toward appearing in the 2012 London Olympics. Former BU pitcher Scott Diamond was named Pitcher of the Year at Class A Advanced Myrtle Beach in the Atlanta Braves organization and hopes to enter major league baseball. But he wouldn’t be the first Bearcat to make it to the big leagues. Johnny Logan was the…
  • Cyril’s NFL Picks

    By Cyril Cheriyan
Lock: San Diego (+1) over BUFFALO: San Diego’s offense looked great this weekend, and I don’t see that stopping. The Bills have a good defense, but not good enough to contain Chargers QB Phillip Rivers. Dallas (-7) over ST. LOUIS: Tony Romo might start this game. But even if backup quarterback Brad Johnson has to go, the Cowboys will drive the Rams right into the ground. Denver (+3) over NEW ENGLAND: Denver’s offense looks great, but their defense is suspect. The Patriots’ offense hasn’t been great this season, so I think that the Broncos will take this one. Indianapolis (-1)…
  • BU swimming and diving aims for the top

    By Cyril Cheriyan
Although the Binghamton University swimming and diving head coach Sean Clark dwells around the waters of the Aquatics Center in the West Gym, his thirst for success is never quenched. He is looking for more than improvement in his squad as it eases into the season. Clark has some milestones he wants to achieve. “I’ve been pretty pleased with our progress, but I am not satisfied,” he said. “There is always room to be better.” Last season the men’s swimming and diving team came in third place in the America East Conference, snapping a four-year second-place finish. A tough loss…
  • Cyril’s NFL Picks: Week 5

    By Cyril Cheriyan
Lock: NY GIANTS over Seattle (-7): Despite some setbacks on the offensive side (bring back Plaxico!), Big Blue seems to have everything on lockdown along with the second-best defensive squad in the NFL. Let’s forget for a second about that curse with the Seahawks losing every time they play out on the East Coast. The Seahawks offensive play is no match for the Giants defense. New England over SAN FRANCISCO (-3): The Pats will have to stop linebacker Patrick Willis if they intend on overcoming the 49ers. Still without Brady, New England is doing all right for themselves. It’s all…
  • Commentary: Opponents benchmark Hooligans, while BU fans grow in the spirit and the love of soccer

    By Cyril Cheriyan
Binghamton University’s men’s soccer team made its home debut in stellar fashion last Friday, and, as always, it did not fail to please the 1,892 fans cheering in the stands. From the stunning 25-yard goal by Ryan Tomko to Ryan Walter’s scuffle with Bucknell’s Tommy McCabe, the game was action-packed. There was only one other factor that made this game perfect: I’m talking about the Bearcat Hooligans. I don’t know what we would do without these guys! The left side of the stands was draped in a white blanket as they made their presence known under the bright lights of…

Fed up after a grueling week of two-hour classes and ridiculous assignments? Got nothing to do on a Friday night? Do you just wanna release your stress in a manner rather than drinking alcohol? Are you a sucker for fresh air? Well, tonight my Binghamton University comrades, I’ve got three words for you: Bearcats Sports Complex. The home opener for the men’s soccer game will be bigger and better than ever this year. Enjoy the aura of the AstroTurf and the towering lanterns that gives a new meaning to the phrase “Friday Night Lights,” or join the chorus of the…
  • BU Volleyball loses in tough home opener

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic The West Gym was filled with shouts and cheers of the Bearcat faithful at the start of Binghamton University’s women’s volleyball home opener. BU came out with a strong start against Colgate last Tuesday night. Little did the crowd know, they would be left in silence as the Raiders (4-6) overcame the Bearcats in a 3-1 win (21-25, 20-25, 25-16, 21-25). Binghamton (3-8) held the lead at the start of three games, but could only hold on to win one of them. “Overall we played pretty well,” said BU head coach Glenn Kiriyama. “Obviously we could have played a little…
  • Cyril’s NFL Picks: Week 3

    By Cyril Cheriyan
Lock: NEW ENGLAND (-12.5) over Miami: Okay so last week I was so sure the Pats wouldn’t be able to pull it off without Brady. Sighh… I have to admit my Jets sure did let me down. The Patriots have proven to me that they can make it work without their prized QB. With Pennington having just as much bad luck as last year with an 0-2 record, theres not a chance they will ever come out of this game alive. PHILADELPHIA (-3) over Pittsburgh: The Eagles have definitely learned from their mistake battling the Cowboys this past week. If…
  • Cyril’s NFL Picks: Week 2

    By Cyril Cheriyan
Seattle (-9) over San Francsico: For the 49ers, the LEAST of their problems is Alex Smith’s shoulder injury. Expect Seattle to bring rain of torrential proportions over San Francisco. NY Jets (-2.5) over New England: Face it, Pat fans, Tom Brady is out, OK? The Jets boast the golden arm of Bret Favre, and that is bound to make some magic. So you can bet that New England will finally be able to drop its first game of the regular season in a long time. Pittsburgh (-5.5) over Cleveland: Last week I claimed the total destruction of Cleveland by Dallas.…
  • Budget cuts leave a dent in BU athletics dept

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The Binghamton University athletic department will have more than just player statistics and game points to keep track of now that New York state knocked off about $2.3 million of the University’s budget. Bearcats sports was among the areas that got hit with cutbacks. Now administrators, teams and coaches alike are taking necessary steps to keep everything running stable. “We took our cuts the way the rest of the campus did,” said Director of Athletics Joel Thirer. “We took our percentage cut. It was not unsubstantial but it was [actually] a significant number for us. The marketing and development staff…
  • Bearcats learn from Pitt-iful performance

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The Ohio University Bobcats and University of Pittsburgh Panthers proved they were the better two of the three fighting felines this past weekend as they both swept the Binghamton University women’s volleyball team in the Pitt Classic this past weekend. However, BU head coach Glenn Kiriyama and his squad did not leave the Steel City empty-handed as they swept the Eastern Kentucky University Colonels in a three-game exploit. “We played pretty well, I thought, overall,” Kiriyama said. “We struggled at times, especially in the first couple of matches, but we played hard throughout and we had a nice match to…
  • BU volleyball looks to upset in Pitt Classic

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic For the Binghamton University women’s volleyball on Friday, it’s all about either climbing out of or falling into “the Pitt.” BU (2-1) will make its way down to Pittsburgh for the Pitt Classic this Friday to face an arduous trio composed of Ohio (0-3), Pittsburgh (1-2) and Eastern Kentucky (1-2). The Bearcats plan to just center in on their own game rather than worry about the integrity and talent of teams they face. “I think we just have to focus on what we are doing on our side of the net and not be intimidated by anything going on the…
  • BU clears closet in two of three

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic For Binghamton University’s women’s volleyball team last weekend, the most important thing in Arizona was not Senator John McCain; it was giving it their all in the Northern Arizona University Invitational. The Bearcats took two of three matches in the first tournament of the season, sweeping both Rutgers and Akron, but dropping all three games in their match against Northern Arizona University. There were a lot of positive points the team took away from each match in the tournament, despite the loss in the last game. The Bearcats had a combined total of 136 kills, 126 sets and 119 digs…

pic DALLAS (-5.5) over Cleveland: OK, so you’re reading picks from a guy who knows just about jack when it comes to professional football, but, hey, who says newbies can’t win? The Browns right now are like cornstarch mixed in water. They usually appear solid at first, but once you really press them you see just how much they fall apart. All you gotta do is look at their preseason games against the Jets and the Bears. Cincinnati (-1) over Baltimore: Both teams have lost key players, but Cincinnati has shown that its players can actually make more than one touchdown…
  • BU men’s basketball to take on Big East and Atlantic 10 foes

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The Bearcats have always been used to going up against Great Danes, Retrievers and Catamounts. This season, however, the Bearcats will face off against some new foes, including Scarlet Knights, Wolverines and the Green Wave. The non-conference schedule for Binghamton University men’s basketball is a demanding one. The Bearcats will be going up against universities that have competed against big names like Villanova and Memphis. Squads like Marist and Bucknell, which have long and rich histories of successes and championships, will be challenging for Binghamton to fight through. Although matching up to these schools will be tough, BU head coach…
  • Kiriyama hits decade marks as Bearcats enter season

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic Ladies and gentlemen, the women of the West Gym are back. With head coach Glenn Kiriyama leading the way, the Bearcats will attempt to go as far as they can to make 2008 a successful season. This year the team comes back with a solid set of four starters and a libero and has also recruited two new players. The team finished fourth in the America East with a 7-5 conference record last year and led the conference in blocking with an average of 3.00 a game. Binghamton also came in second for the most number of digs (17.12) in…
  • A finals loss last season, but a dynasty still thriving

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic Tracking a Dynasty 2003 The Binghamton University men’s soccer team started its reign in 2003 with a 4-1-4 America East Conference season, in which it scored no more than two goals a game. With seven games tied and only three games dropped for the entire season, the Bearcats quickly made their way to the top. The team faced off against Hartford in the AE semifinals and former defender Graham Munro put in the single goal to win the game. Northeastern, then a member of the AE, took on the Bearcats in the finals. Both teams were deadlocked at one goal…
  • Bearcats alumni make strides in pros

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The impact of Binghamton University sports for many athletes goes well beyond their college years. Two BU alumni in particular, Rory Quiller and Scott Diamond, have been making stunning progress in their respective fields, hoping to make their dreams become reality. Pole-vaulter Rory Quiller will stop at nothing to jump higher than he has ever before with Binghamton in his heart and the Olympics on the horizon. The 24-year-old Binghamton grad student reached many milestones in the last months by passing personal goals, breaking college records and becoming the first ever NCAA Division I champion from both Binghamton and the…
  • The Top 10 Bearcats to watch for in 2008-09

    By Cyril Cheriyan
Cameron Keith: Men’s Soccer Keith, a junior forward had a total of 10 points in 14 games for the season. Keith burst into the scene scoring five goals to win two straight games against Cornell and Boston University, respectively. His efforts earned him last year’s title of America East Striker of the Year as the Scottish native topped the conference in shots, points and goals. Dawn Lammert: Women’s Volleyball/Track and Field Playing just one sport is quite the challenge for most athletes, but for this Bearcat, playing two is a charm. You can find Binghamton junior Dawn Lammert playing volleyball…
  • The Hooligans leave mark on Binghamton soccer

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic Just watching soccer can be an exciting experience, especially at the Bearcat Sports Complex. But some Binghamton University fans take it to another level. If you feel you were born to do more than just watch the game … if you feel you have the power to bring forth mockery and terror to the opponents … if you want to streak your face with green and white, and sing English songs with a group of burly men — well, die-hard fans — there is a spot reserved just for you right next to the press box. They go by the…
  • Getting Involved with BU sports

    By Cyril Cheriyan
Don’t feel as if watching games is the only thing that you can do here in Binghamton when it comes to sports. There is a large spectrum of options that you, the student, have at your fingertips. If students want to get more deeply involved within the athletics department, they don’t need to look any further than their academics according to Dave Simek, Binghamton University’s associate director of athletics, promotion, advertising and external events. “[There are] a lot of different ways [to be involved] aside from just being a good, true, bleed-green BU Zoo fan and coming to as many…
  • Welcome to BU sports

    By Cyril Cheriyan
At one point in your adjustment to Binghamton University, there has probably been one question in particular that has come across your mind. “What exactly is a Bearcat?” It is more than just a fusion of bear and house cat. The Bearcat is the symbol of BU sports, and moreover, the heart of the fandom that you, a Bearcat fan, will be a part of. No, we may not be UCLA or Memphis, and no, we do not have a football team. Still, we find other ways to carry on our exciting history of pride, tradition and talent. In 2001,…
  • Tennis falls to Tulsa in NCAA Tournament

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The Binghamton University men’s tennis team’s season came to an end Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship at the hands of the host University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane, in Tulsa, Okla. The Bearcats (13-11) were swept by 11th-seeded Golden Hurricane (22-4), 4-0. Binghamton has made the NCAA Tournament four times in the last six years. BU freshman Sven Vloedgraven and junior Sebastian Dietz played a tight match against the No. 55 duo Arnau Brugues and Ricardo Soriano at second doubles. Binghamton was down 6-5, but the match ended in favor of Tulsa because it clinched…
  • Heartbreaker: Men’s lacrosse falls at AE Tournament in overtime

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic When a team is three goals ahead of the fifth-ranked collegiate squad in the United States, there can be nothing more exhilarating. But when that same team loses it all in about 10 minutes there is nothing more devastating. The Binghamton University men’s lacrosse team (4-8, 2-4 America East) dropped out of the AE championships, losing to the Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers (10-3, 6-0) in sudden-death overtime on Thursday 6-5. “It was a spirited game,” said BU head coach Ed Stephenson. “We fought a hard battle, but it ended up not coming in.” The Bearcats held a three-point lead 3 minutes,…

Pro sports will always have its controversies, disputes and scandals. It’s entertainment, so naturally those things come with the territory. But what if the real issues are not really coming from within the games? What if it isn’t about the teams and athletes? What if it is something a little closer to home? I’m talking about us: the spectators, the fans — the people who are being catered to. Here are a bunch of things that fans do that really rumble the world of sports. Don’t hate your state: Every person holds some pride for his or her own state.…
  • Men’s lacrosse in overtime on Senior Day

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic If the Binghamton University men’s lacrosse team signed up for a reality show, the song that would play following Saturday’s regionally televised Senior Day matchup against Stony Brook University would have to be the chorus of “In the End” by Linkin Park. They tried so hard and got so far, but in the end it didn’t even matter. The Seawolves (7-4, 3-1 America East) edged out Binghamton in sudden death on just 15 seconds into overtime. It almost looked like a win for the Bearcats, as they held the 6-5 lead in the last minute of the fourth quarter, but…
  • Men’s lacrosse holds on to snap losing skid

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic As far as the Binghamton University men’s lacrosse team was concerned last Saturday, the letter “‘V” no longer stood for Vermont. V finally stood for victory. After drowning in a sea of five straight losses since mid-March, the visiting Bearcats (3-6, 1-2 America East) finally broke the surface for air after defeating the Catamounts 6-5. The conference win puts Binghamton into fourth place in the America East. “It was nice, I wouldn’t say pressure’s off. It’s definitely a sigh of relief to get that win,” said junior BU goalkeeper Larry Kline. “Losing’s not very fun, I’ll tell you that much.…
  • Losing skid hits 5 games for men’s lacrosse

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic When most people think of the number five they remember the Jackson 5, Kevin Garnett, Joe DiMaggio and the U.S. dollar with Abraham Lincoln’s portrait. For the Binghamton University men’s lacrosse team, however, the only thing No. 5 represents is the current losing streak, which was extended by the Bearcats’ 9-7 non-conference loss to the Colgate Red Raiders (6-5) Tuesday at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The fifth-place Bearcats (2-5, 0-2 America East) fell short after rallying hard in the fourth quarter. The Raiders had their lead extended five points with 6 minutes, 36 seconds remaining until the end of the…

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The Bearcats Sports Complex will be scattered with clashing colors of red and green on Tuesday when the Binghamton University’s men’s lacrosse team takes on the Colgate Red Raiders (5-5, 2-2 Patriot League). The Bearcats (2-5, 0-2 America East) enter the non-conference match on a four-game losing streak after falling to visiting Maryland-Baltimore County 10-5 on Saturday. The Raiders are in fourth place in the seven-team Patriot league and have won two out of their four conference games, while the Bearcats remain winless in the America East and second to last, in fifth place. The Raiders bring in a strong…
  • Fried and Patterson grateful for NCAA experience

    By Cyril Cheriyan
For Binghamton University wrestlers Kyle Fried and Josh Patterson, the NCAA Tournament ended on an abrupt note, but the experiences they took away from it made up for their early exits. “The tournament went really well, and I was among some of the greatest [athletes],” said Fried, a senior. “I mean, we are talking about the top wrestlers in the nation duking it out. It’s something that you will take with you for the rest of your life.” The championship was held March 20 at the Scott Trade center in St. Louis, with over 90 schools participating in the event.…
  • Women’s basketball eliminated from conference tournament

    By Cyril Cheriyan
If anyone wanted to see a replay of what happened to the Bearcats in the America East Men’s Basketball Championship, all they would have to do is attend the AE Women’s Basketball Championship last Friday in Hartford. Fifth seed? Check. Nice lead in the first half? Check. Seeing it disappear in the second? Check. Even the final score was almost identical. The only difference was that this time, it was archrival Albany who defeated the Binghamton University women’s team, 64-57. “We were definitely disappointed with the outcome,” said Bearcat head coach Rich Conover. “I thought we played a great first…
  • From Latvia, With Love: Laine Kurpniece ‘s journey at Binghamton

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic Priekshu komandas! That’s how you would root for the Bearcats if you were living in Latvia. If you were a Bearcats fan in Latvia, you would also probably cheer for basketball star Laine Kurpniece, native of Latvia and senior on the Binghamton University women’s basketball team. After providing BU with four years of European hospitality, Kurpniece will hang up the green and white jersey and head back to her hometown of Riga, Latvia, at the end of this year. She admits she will definitely miss her home away from home. “Binghamton has been my college for four years, so mentally…
  • Two wrestlers head to NCAAs

    By Cyril Cheriyan
They came, they wrestled, they conquered. Senior Kyle Fried and sophomore Josh Patterson will take the Bearcats to the NCAA wrestling championships in St. Louis from March 20 to 22 after strong performances at the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament held at Hofstra this weekend. Binghamton University finished sixth out of nine schools, as it moves up slowly each year in the standings. In last year’s competition, the Bearcats placed seventh and the year before that, they were ninth out of 11. “We accomplished one of our goals, which was to improve,” said Bearcats head coach Pat Popolizio. “We lived up…
  • Women’s basketball loses home finale

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic For the Binghamton University women’s basketball team, the last home game of the season ended in a mun-Dane way. The Bearcats collapsed against the Albany Great Danes on Wednesday 63-49, guaranteeing them the fifth seed in next weekend’s America East tournament. The loss is a depressing one for Binghamton, especially for the seniors who end their last season on a heavy note. “It’s … disappointing,” said senior Laine Kurpniece. “We broke down the second half and it is definitely sad that we ended things like this.” The Bearcats kept in pace with Albany throughout the first half, allowing the gap…
  • No. 1 UMBC vs. No. 8 SBU/ No. 9 Maine: UMBC is golden

    By Cyril Cheriyan
Look who’s wearing the leashes now. Predicted to finish fifth in the America East Conference this season, the UMBC Retrievers (21-8, 13-3 AE) turned the game of basketball on its head, chasing their rival teams to the hills. A spectacular conference season places the Retrievers as AE Men’s Basketball Championship’s top seed. “I think it means a great deal to the program,” said UMBC head coach Randy Monroe in a press release. “We were picked to finish fifth and we finished first. It was a great motivator to our guys. To see our guys go to the other team’s home…
  • No. 1 UMBC vs. No. 8 SBU/No. 9 Maine matchups

    By Cyril Cheriyan
Centers UMBC: UMBC doesn’t play a true center. Cavell Johnson and Justin Fry play out of position at times, but as anyone can see, it doesn’t really affect them in a negative way at all. SBU/Maine Should Maine defeat Stony Brook, 6-foot-9-inch senior center Brian Andre may present a challenge to UMBC. He has a .554 field goal percentage which is first in the America East conference. Stony Brook’s 6-foot-9-inch senior Emanuel Neto is a decent player as well as, who places third in the conference in rebounding and is a presence on both sides of the ball. Advantage: Maine/Stony…
  • Women’s basketball rallies to beat Maine

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic After last week’s loss to Hartford, Binghamton University’s head coach Rich Conover called the next game a must win; his Bearcats never failed him. The Binghamton women’s basketball team staged a thrilling rally at the end of the second half to defeat the Maine Black Bears 64-57. “I’m very pleased to come out with a victory,” said Conover. “We really came through in the end.” The Bearcats struggled throughout the game, getting a total of 19 turnovers and placing only eight out of 30 shots in the first half. Out of the 20 shots attempted from beyond the arc, Binghamton…
  • Track and field heads to AE Championships

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The Binghamton University track and field team heads down to Boston this Friday with hearts running, jumping, hurdling and throwing in anticipation for a chance to win at the America East Conference Championship. The two-day indoor conference meet begins Friday morning at 10. For the past two seasons, the men of Albany and the Boston University women have taken ownership of the AE title. The Bearcats came in fourth place last season, but head coach Mike Thompson hopes to move up in the rankings this year. “For the men, we hope to finish in the top three or top two,”…
  • Bearcats tremble against Terriers

    By Cyril Cheriyan
Call it the pressure of being away from home. The crazy Boston fans, the horrible clash of red and white, the caricatures of grilling mutts on shirts and banners — it just was not the “BU” the Binghamton University women’s basketball team was used to playing in. The Bearcats collapsed under the pressure from the Boston University Terriers Wednesday, dropping the decision 82-75. The loss knocks the team down to fifth in the America East Conference and drops their road record to a depressing 1-11. “It was a huge conference game,” said Binghamton head coach Rich Conover. “I thought we…
  • Bearcats make a splash for AE championship

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic In what has turned out to be a very successful season, the Binghamton University swimming and diving team will head up to Maine for the America East Conference Championships this weekend with fervor, going in with all that they have got and hoping to come out with victory. During the meet, the Bearcats will be ranked both as individuals and as teams. UMBC has been the AE Champion for three consecutive years while Binghamton has taken silver in the last four years of the event, but head coach Sean Clark and his Bearcats hope to steal the title away from…
  • Women’s basketball falls at Maine for second straight road loss

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic Head coach Rich Conover and his Binghamton University women’s basketball team left University of Maine’s Alfond Arena with their hearts heavy and hands empty Saturday. The Bearcats lost their 10th road game of the season in 11 tries, 63-50 to the Black Bears, pushing the Bearcats into fourth place in the America East Conference. Binghamton again finds itself in a slump with losses in three of its last four. “We were [not] as aggressive as we liked to be,” said Conover. “We did not create opportunities for ourselves, and [Maine] took advantage of our tentativeness.” Binghamton (6-14, 4-3 AE) led…
  • Women’s team half game out of first

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The Binghamton University women’s basketball team is downing America East Conference opponents like Cookie Monster downs cookies. The Bearcats (6-12, 4-1 AE) claimed their latest victim Saturday, defeating Stony Brook, 59-35. The victory moved Binghamton into second place, a half game behind Hartford and Vermont. “I thought we played well overall,” said BU head coach Rich Conover. “We worked well against Stony Brook, who was a good defensive team.” The Seawolves (6-12, 1-4) tried their best to hold off the Bearcats with a total of 39 rebounds, but the Bearcats offense, led by senior forward Juta Jahilo, set the pace…
  • Women’s basketball turns it on during America East play

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic Things are looking up for Rich Conover’s Binghamton University women’s basketball team. Despite an overall rough season recording 6-13, the Bearcats have opened America East play with a 4-1 record and are just a half game out of first place. “This is more representing of what we expected this season,” Conover said. “We have had a lot of unfortunate games, but this is where we wanted to be in the conference.” The Bearcats had struggled on the court defensively in the beginning of the season; however, they now believe that they are getting much better. “Both the individual and team…
  • Rough start continues for women’s basketball

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The road continues to be filled with potholes and barriers for the Binghamton University women’s basketball team. Their travel to Pittsburgh in search of victory only ended in defeat Tuesday, 75-65, to the Duquesne Dukes. “We played real well on the court, especially in the first couple of minutes, and then fell back a bit,” said BU head coach Rich Conover. “There were certain points in the game where I felt we could have played a lot better.” The Bearcats’ (1-6) pace with the Dukes (5-3) midway through the first half, tying the game 14-14 with 12 minutes remaining. Over…
  • Hangin’ out, down the street, with Dawn Lammert

    By Cyril Cheriyan
When you think about Wisconsin, the first thing that comes to mind is cheese — cheese and the late Chris Farley. But if you watched the Binghamton University women’s volleyball team at any point this season, you would have another association with “the Badger State” — Dawn Lammert. A 6-foot-1-inch sophomore middle-hitter, Lammert does a phenomenal job on the court, placing a force field at the net along with her teammate and close friend, senior Jacki Kane. Lammert is the second-best blocker in the America East Conference, averaging 1.26 blocks per game. She first got involved with volleyball in sixth…
  • Coming home empty-handed: women’s basketball remains winless

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic It was one of those games that left Bearcats fans grumbling, mumbling and shaking their heads. The Binghamton University women’s basketball team could not seem to score and dropped a disappointing home opener, 59-55, at the Events Center. The Bearcats have lost all five of their games of the season. “We were really disappointed with the outcome,” said Binghamton head coach Rich Conover. “We [just] need to get better with the ball … and more decisive with the passing.” The game went back and forth in the first half, with the Bearcats (0-5) leading by as many as four points…
  • Women’s basketball set for Wednesday’s home opener

    By Cyril Cheriyan
After three weeks of disappointing outcomes, the winless Binghamton University women’s basketball team is finally glad to be back in the rolling hills of Vestal as it gears up to face Bucknell at the Events Center on Wednesday night. “The road has [not] been good to us,” said BU head coach Rich Conover. “Hopefully this game will turn things around.” To say that the Bearcats (0-4) have had it rough away from home would be an understatement, and they’re going to need to work harder than ever after this tough start to live up to their third-place selection in the…
  • Poor first half dooms Bearcats vs. Bonnies

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The dictionary definition for the word “inconsistency” reads: “The state or quality of not being in agreement or harmony; incompatible.” However, when it comes to Binghamton University, “inconsistency” simply screams women’s basketball. The Bearcats (0-2) stumbled into the First Arena in Elmira on Saturday, dropping their second straight game of the season, surrendering to St. Bonaventure 58-53. An abysmal performance in the first half and a great free-throw run by the Bonnies in the second half cost the Bearcats the game. Interestingly enough, the game at Elmira was intended to be a tournament that ended up a as a one-on-one…
  • Bearcats set to face Bonnies in Elmira

    By Cyril Cheriyan
On Saturday the Binghamton University women’s basketball team will attempt to do what the men’s team could not — overcome St. Bonaventure. The Bearcats (0-1) and the Bonnies (3-0) meet at a neutral site, the Elmira BC Arena, at 4 p.m. Binghamton’s season-opening loss to Portland State last Saturday did not shake the spirit of the team; however, it did let them know where they needed to improve. The Bonnies defeated Binghamton’s America East rival Albany 64-62 in its most recent win at home on Tuesday. Bearcats head coach Rich Conover will rely on consistency, strong defense and the upperclassmen…
  • Women’s basketball dominates final exhibition

    By Cyril Cheriyan
On Tuesday night the highlights at the Events Center included stunning performances by the Binghamton University Dance Team, the Cheer Team and a guy who won 50 bucks catching flying paper in a six foot plastic chamber … And of course (who could forget), there was also the impressive win by women’s basketball that demolished guest St. Rose in the exhibition game 90-55. As the preseason came to a close, Binghamton truly demonstrated its potential to be an outstanding team this season. “I was pleased,” said head coach Rich Conover. “I thought we came into the game strong and stayed…
  • Volleyball loses to Stony Brook 3-1

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic It took four tough games for the visiting Stony Brook Seawolves to triumph over the Bearcats volleyball team, 3-1, Thursday night at the West Gym. While the Seawolves are now on a 10-game winning streak, BU remains in fourth place in the America East Conference, unadulterated by yesterday’s result and overall, glad with its performance. “I thought our team fought well,” said BU head coach Glenn Kiriyama. “We made some nice comebacks.” The Bearcats proved to be a worthy opponent for the first-place Seawolves. The four games had a total of 50 tie scores and 25 lead changes. The first…
  • Volleyball loses to Danes, next up: Stony Brook

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The trip back from the Empire State capital was a disheartening one for the Binghamton University volleyball team, as they lost at Albany, 3-1. It was the Bearcats’ second straight conference loss, dropping them down to fourth in the conference. “It was a tough match,” said head coach Glenn Kiriyama. “Although we played well at times, Albany played much better.” The Great Danes (16-8, 6-3 AE) indeed put up a great match, outplaying Binghamton (15-16, 6-4 AE) in almost every single aspect with a total of 60 kills and four players each reaching double digits in kills. Albany proved they…
  • Volleyball looking to knock off Great Danes on the road

    By Cyril Cheriyan
This season the Bearcats have expressed their revulsion for a variety of canines, including Saint Bernards and Retrievers; however, the question remains if the team can hold it down against the Great Danes. Head coach Glenn Kiriyama’s volleyball army treks northeast for part two of the America East Conference showdown against rival Albany tonight. Kiriyama cannot recall the last time Binghamton defeated Albany on its home court, but according to the coach there is a good chance that the team will pull through. “We want to play better this time,” Kiriyama said. “It is definitely an important game.” Having most…
  • How sweep it is! BU 2-for-2 vs. UMBC

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic At the dawn of last Friday’s game, coach Glenn Kiriyama’s volleyball squad braced itself for the arrival of the UMBC Retrievers. What the team expected was a challenge, with players as worthy as the sports canine Air Bud. What Binghamton University got was Odie from “Garfield.” The Bearcats demolished the UMBC Retrievers in a four-game exploit on Friday at home and then went on to sweep them 3-0 on Sunday at Maryland. “I thought the team played exceptionally well this weekend,” said Kiriyama, whose team is now in second place in the conference behind Stony Brook. “These matches were crucial.”…
  • Big volleyball showdown tonight vs. UMBC

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The Bearcats volleyball team plans to make like Michael Vick and put down the UMBC Retrievers tomorrow at the West Gym in their sixth conference match of the season. They are gearing up for what will be a hard-hitting and challenging game. “It’s going to be a tough match,” said head coach Glenn Kiriyama. “They are going to be a rough team, but we look forward to playing them.” The first-place Retrievers have had a phenomenal record this season in the America East Conference (4-1) and overall (19-5). The team swept all three AE Conference Weekly awards last week including…
  • BU volleyball keeps on rolling

    By Cyril Cheriyan
It seemed as if the pilgrimage back to Binghamton lifted the dry spell off coach Glenn Kiriyama’s volleyball squad. After a successful weekend the Bearcats kept rolling, defeating the Colgate Raiders 3-0. The third straight victory brings BU’s record to 9-12 and keeps them tied for first in the America East conference. The first two games against Colgate were a piece of cake for the Bearcats. Binghamton jumped to a 7-2 lead in the first game and led the whole way for a 30-27 victory. Game two mirrored the first game as BU overpowered the Red Raiders without fault and…
  • Bearcats open the AE season undefeated after pair of wins

    By Cyril Cheriyan
In the words of LL Cool J: “Mama said knock you out.” The Bearcats bounced back last weekend, ending their eight-game slump with a pair of victories against their America East counterparts, New Hampshire and Maine. The wins place Binghamton University first among UMBC and Albany in the America East conference, and continue its 16 home conference game win streak. “What can I say?” coach Glenn Kiriyama said. “Those were [really] big wins for us. I think it gives our team a lot of confidence going into the conference.” “Everyone played well,” added sophomore Bearcat Dawn Lammert. “It was [the…
  • Volleyball hosts first conference matches

    By Cyril Cheriyan
Perhaps one of the Bearcats had broken a mirror in the locker room before a game or head coach Glenn Kiriyama had walked underneath a ladder on his way to practice. Whatever it was, the Binghamton University volleyball team has to do something to reverse its current eight-game losing streak starting tonight as the New Hampshire Wildcats stalk their way down to Binghamton to challenge the team in its first America East Conference game of the season at 7 p.m. The game will be followed by another home conference match against Maine on Sunday at 10 a.m. The game against…
  • Tough weekend for Bearcats volleyball

    By Cyril Cheriyan
pic What looked like a tough break last Tuesday tumbled into tragedy this past weekend for the Bearcats, who returned home winless from the Villanova Classic volleyball tournament. The five consecutive losses this past week dropped the team from second to sixth overall in the America East. “It didn’t look pretty up there,” said coach Glenn Kiriyama about his team’s performance against William and Mary, Villanova, Princeton and Liberty. “The four teams were all similar in strength. We just [did not] play well enough.” Kiriyama believes that although the weekend did not go according to plan, the Bearcats did show improvement…

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The Bearcats are coming soon to the West Gym near you! The women’s volleyball team (6-4) takes center stage tonight to defend its home court for the first time this season against Syracuse (7-4). After winning the Golden Flash Invitational on Saturday, the Bearcats have a total of six victories so far this season and said they are looking forward to playing on their own turf for a change. “We are all excited to play back at Binghamton,” said head coach Glenn Kiriyama. “It’s been a while since [we have played] at home, and it will be nice just to…

New Rochelle is said to be the home of singer Don McLean, former baseball star Willie Mays and late actor Ossie Davis. It also is the birthplace of actor Matt Dillon, comedian Jay Leno and many others. But in this city of famous stars and legends, there was nothing to be said of the Binghamton women’s lacrosse team’s sixth consecutive loss, as the Iona Gaels (8-7) rocked the Bearcats (1-13), 18-12. The game opened in favor of the ’Cats with a goal apiece from senior Heather Grose, junior Leanne Musso and freshman Kate Gromatsky. But Iona struck back and put…
  • Women’s lax goes 1-4 during break

    By Cyril Cheriyan
The past week proved to be a tough one for the women’s lacrosse team as it managed only one victory in four matches. The first game was a 21-5 loss to the Marist Red Foxes (5-4). The 21 goals for Marist was the second-highest single-game total in program history and the highest goal output since its 22 points against Howard in 1998. Bearcats sophomore Kara Slowik tied game highs with five ground balls and five caused turnovers. Binghamton next faced America East rival Albany (5-7) in the home opener for the Bearcats. But they came up short, losing 16-6. Senior…
